We talk a lot about computer builds and editing programs and even monitors and desks but I don't really see any topics on chairs. Considering we spend 99.9999% of the time sitting while editing at our desktop, I have to wonder what others suggest when it comes to computer chairs. I'm looking for a new one and not sure if I can get a decent one under $100 or not.

You can't. Sturdy chairs with lots of adjustment planes, and soft, cushioning are expensive.

Funny I just started looking into chairs last night! Yes, it sucks as they are so damn expensive. Its like a good mattress you know - you are in it a LOT so why not pay more? But my theory is screw that, they should be cheap!

Office depo had a store only chair blowout sale this weekend.
I got one for wife {small leather} for half off {$45.00}.
She prefers small pettite tight butt models.
They had nice big high back ones for $100.00 also.
I prefer high back soft pad leather {Lane Exec model}.
The sale was over Monday but online orderering also looked good.
No butts about it !!!

it's like with cameras, lenses and basically almost everything you can buy. you get what you pay for. having a bad back since i was 18 i can tell you should choose wisely. if you spend a lot of time in the chair you will probably regret getting a cheap one some time in the future. imho by far the best desk chairs one can buy for a reasonable (yet high) price are the herman miller aeron series (external link).

Herman Miller Chairs = Awesome!

I used to work with a freelance video editor who specified these chairs in his contract. No HM Chair? No Deal...

He knew what it was like to be parked on your backside for long hours and what poor ergonomics could do to your anatomy...

Finally something I feel I can actually contribute too!

When starting my first architectural job my boss took me to two places: their local computer builder to pickup a nice computer and the local Steelcase retailer to pickup a nice chair.

He said that he only will be using two things: my brains and my ass. And he wanted them both to be well supported.

Look at Herman Miller and Steelcase lines, both of which have top-of-the-line models but typically have a 1 or 2 step lower model for cheaper money but don't fool yourself, it will be pricey.

I personally have 2 Steelcase Leap chairs, one at home & one at my office @ $900-1k ea. but I'd write that check everytime because they are light years ahead of the Office Depot/Max, Staples forms.

Here's a good website, if you haven't found it already: http://www.sit4less.org/ (external link)
