Just over a year ago, I had the special privilege of shooting family portraits for a cancer patient and her family. It was one of my most memorable sessions to date, in large part because this trooper of a lady smiled for every picture without a single complaint...and she had just come from chemo treatment.

A few weeks ago, I received an email from her daughter, telling me that her mother finally went to be with the Lord after her battle with stomach cancer. The family was preparing for a very large memorial service and asked if I was available to document the day, especially since many of her friends and relatives from Japan could not be present for the memorial. What a special memorial it was! I was honored to be there with over 700 others who were touched by this special lady. It was an emotional service filled with laughter and tears as family and friends recalled the impact this lady made.

Below a small sampling. Please take some time to see more photos on this link...thanks!

awesome shots! you did a great job of capturing a positive feeling from the service, which is a nice contrast. too many funerals are dark and gloomy. i like them a lot!

You did a lovely job of capturing this sad moment, but it is wonderful to see the family and friends laughing as well. One can tell she will be remembered as a lovely lady, loved by many.

You captured something what is usually difficult to photograph properly. Great job.

Excellent work Tim! In this situation, the best photo is the one that truly captures the special moments and raw emotions coming out and you've done that and then some. RIP

Fantastic work - those have a very candid-but-classy feel to them. I've shot a memorial ceremony before; it can be uncomfortable at times, because not everyone likes the idea of someone taking pictures when you "should" be mourning. That whole argument aside, there's little doubt your photos will be treasured by the family. In part because you captured the moments, and largely because you did it so well.
