Hi All, I am looking at getting a new NAS system primarily for the storage and online viewing of my photo collection. I was wondering if there are any members with experience using a Synology DS411j and more specifically any feedback on their DSM PhotoStation application?
Thanks

So after much research and deliberation, I finally made my purchase. I decided to configure a Synology DS211 with 1 Terabytes of storage (actually 2 x 1T Drives in a RAID1 or mirrored for redundancy). This model offered greater performance over the originally contemplated DS411j for the same cost but with less drive expandability (total 6T if required). I've spent the last several days setting up this NAS and I can comfortably say that I am VERY HAPPY with my decision.

I will not bother giving you a rundown of all the wonderful features as if you are interested in such a unit you can visit the www.synology.com (external link) website for that. I will however let you know that the system does an excellent job of storing my 20,000+ photo library and services it out to the Internet in a very simple and efficient web interface. In the end, the unit completely met my criteria - mass photography storage, redundancy and back-up, remote access to all files, and a great digital asset management software package that performs quite acceptably over the Internet.

hope this helps anyone facing the same data storage requirements.

I just built a very low power (120 watt power supply) mini PC with a few hard drives in it to be my NAS device. On top of that it doubles as a PC for random uses downstairs.

I am going to order the Synology DS211J and I have been looking at hard drives. Some of the Seagate has reports of hanging or DOA. anyone have any recommendations? I am looking at 2 1TB drives.
Thanks,
Bryan

I believe I purchased 2 ((Seagate Barracuda (ST31000524AS) 7200.12 SATA3 6.0Gb/s 1000GB (1TB) 32MB Cache (OEM)
Part no: ST31000524AS))

And installed in a RAID configuration (mirrored)
No issues.

I purchased the same NAS unit but used 2 x Samsung Stealth 1.5 TB drives. Really quiet and stable drives, pretty sure they only spin @ 5400 but in real wotrld terms not a great deal of speed difference.

I purchased ds211j about one month ago and been very happy with it thus far. setup was not that hard execpt for the part where you have to configure to open ports to access it from the outside.

I paired it with 2x 2tb seagate HD running at 5900rpm.

Its cheap and little bit slow but the NAS is running on a atom based cpu so speed of the hd will make little difference over the network.

I have been looking at the 5900 and 7200 rpm and didnt know if was going to make a big difference. I read about several of the seagate drives failing... its like the bing commercial too much info and the brain starts to hummm. I was looking at the same setup as Titaniumpete. I an def sold on the Synology just undecided on the HD.
I appreciate all the input.

I'm in the computer industry and on HD reliability, its a luck of the draw. Go with cost value for the NAS due to the fact its use for backing up data and not heavily used. Also mirror the drives because the likely hood of both HD failing at one time is almost impossible like winning the lottery.

I've been a Synology customer for years and have bough probably 5 or 6 NAS from them including a rackstation.

They are great products, the software could be a little bit better, but for for the basic NAS feature and network backup they are great.

I was thinking the same thing... I have had only 1 drive to drop dead on me and I had very little backed up...it was back when a 30 gig was boss. I was thinking a pair of 7200 2TB's mirrored. then if 1 drops I could just put another in. All is Great on the planet. :)
