So in the old days (2 years ago) you could have a 5D like mine and then upgrade an XTi to a 30D for backup. One of the advantages of this is that these cameras use the same battery.

Since its always good to have extra batteries its not uncommon, in this example, to have three to five batteries. So along comes the 5D MII, 7D and now the 60D.

If you have two cameras, you are almost forced to upgrade both. Some may have done that, but then again maybe you upgraded just one of them and you live with two battery types.

So the question is does battery type affect your purchase decisions?

Why would you let something as simple as batteries be an impediment to better features? Its nice having one battery for two cameras, but I wouldnt let it stand in the way of an upgrade.

Or you could just get grips for everything and use the separate trays to run everything on AA batteries. Sort of kidding :) but I'm the type who will always include a grip with my camera purchase...

I remember when people where purchasing the 5DMII, one of the complaints was that they where going to have to repurchase their battery collection. Some may decide to wait on a purchase to upgrade their main and backup cameras. I guess this would be more of an issue for wedding photographers.

I wouldnt let battery type affect my purchase, but its certainly a nice afterrhought knowing that its a widely available type/ aftermarket batteries are readily available.

In a 2 photographer household we have 5 cameras that take the BP-511.

Having backup batteries for each was no problem--just get generic replacements from a reputable source for a couple bucks each.

Going to a chipped battery to force an OEM replacement at grossly overinflated prices was a move that pi$$ed me off--buying a large quantity @ around 60 bucks each is not a small investment--and has affected my upgrades.

Good question. IMO it comes down to how often you need to swop batteries. I've got to be really honest here, I has two batteries for the 350D, and except when one had been in for ages, I only ever swopped them in the field when I was shooting over a full day (and not always then!)

With the 450, the second battery has not even been used yet.

The real answer would be what the cost of a spare was: I would almost certainly buy one, but an upgrade which used the same batteries would be good: except if I was selling the older model!

I appreciate the convenience of my cameras using the same battery - like having a 7D as a backup for my 5D MKII's was preferred over something like a 50D because they use the same battery - but it's not that high up on the buying criteria.

I think its a nice conveince if the 2 bodies share the same battery. I hope if and when the 5D MKIII or whatever they may call it takes the same battery as the 60D, 7D, and 5D MKII.

But I dont think it will be a deal breaker if it doesnt, and contains alot of the features people want.

i guess. it's a lot less confusing when you use bodies with the same battery

It's a pretty simple question.

yes and one that i have a hard time understanding why it is even an issue. It is the same thing as saying I don't want to upgrade my camera to a 60D b/c it doesn't accept CF cards. As if it would be that hard to sell the CF cards and buy some SD. Sorry but neither would keep me from an upgrade. Not to mention if you can't afford the hit you take on selling your batteries then you probably shouldn't be upgrading cams in the first place.
