Thes shots are quite good. What did you use for camera support, a gimbal head or a straight ballhead on tripod

I used a Gimbal (Jobu Blackwidow HD Gimbal Head MkII). Good support with this combo is essential in my experience.

It is disappointing that the new 2x III is not stackable.

Do you mean that it's not stackable with the version II 1.4x tc, or the version III 1.4x tc? (or both/neither)

Apparently it is not stackable with either the 1.4x III or 1.4x II. It looks like a deliberate move by Canon to stop converter stacking with the new tc's.

Correct - the version III 2X teleconverter does not have an adequate opening in the back (camera end) to accomodate the protrusion on the 1.4X II. I'm not 100% sure about the possibility of stacking the Mk III 1.4X behind the 2X, but the images I've seen comparing the two 1.4X telecons shows the dimensions to be the same.

No I do not, never thought of taking one. But this is what I use if that is any good to you - I use a Feisol 3372 Carbon Fiber Tripod + Jobu Blackwidow HD Gimbal Head MkII.

I'm not Roy, but if this helps, here's a couple shots of my jobu gimbal with the 300 2.8
Sits on a Manfrotto Carbon One tripod.

Ok, I wish to see some 300 2.8L non-is samples w/teleconverters..

300 2.8 non-IS w/Canon 1.4 TC. Hand held, wide open, which of course makes a 2.8 into a f/4.
The sign was approx 100 feet away. That's the whole frame, no crop. 1DS ( FF )

That's a nice mount, George. I'm still using the poor man's gimble - the Manfrotto 3421.

Tom,
I waffled back and forth before I bought this jobu, between it and the Wimberley. After reading all the reviews and comments, I decided on it. I've never used the Wimberley, nor have I used the one you have, so all I can comment on is this one, and I can say it works very well indeed.

Thanks.

I guess that means I'll have to settle for series II converters. Even though the series III TCs MAY produce SLIGHTLY sharper images than the series II TCs, to me having the ability to stack the series II TCs if/when necessary, outweighs any SLIM POSSIBLE sharpness advantage of the series III TCs.

So, the only way you can stack them is with the 1.4x I and the 2x I? Or can you also stack the 1.4x II and 2x II? I'm confused.

Actually the original (series I) converters are also NOT stackable.

The ONLY ones that are, are the series II converters, and apparently ONLY with each other. (As far as if they're both Canon converters.)

The series II converters are also stackable with Kenko converters I believe.
