Anyways I got my first SLR camera , a Canon EOS 1000D.

Can anyone give me some reccomended reading that will get me upto speed aswell as what lenses I would need to take pictures close to something like this :

I live ontop of a small mountain so my view outside my window is awsome!

Im hoping to achieve something like that....or am I dreaming?

All I see is a banner. Did you want to take pictures like the small images within the banner?

Anyways, I'm pretty much self taught, and while I don't have exact guides for you, some things worth googling and reading:

  • Your camera manual (it's hard to take good pictures if you don't know how to operate your camera)
  • Exposure triangle
  • Rule of Thirds
  • Image composition
  • Depth of Field
  • Stop Action

They're all basic yet essential points and will make a huge difference in your photography.

Check this out - might even be worth printing it out and reading a few times at your leisure. There's a lot of information to take in when you first start out so at least you can keep reading it in chunks until everything clicks:

Read the 1st, 4th & 5th sticky threads in this forum: https://photography-on-the.net/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=13 as these will give you a good start. The book "Understanding Exposure" by Brian Petersen (sp?) is often quoted as a very good read for starters.

Before getting into spending money on more lenses you should spend time taking photos for a while to get the feel of the camera and get an idea of what focal length lenses you would prefer to shoot with. Be sure to post your efforts up on the forum too for some valuable honest critique by other members.

Welcome to the forum! :)

After you read all the stickies, you might also try this out.

1. Set your camera to Auto mode.
2. Take a picture of what you want.
3. Review the picture and look at the settings set by your camera (i.e. the shutter speed, aperture value, iso, etc.).
4. Based on your understanding from the reading, set your camera to manual, adjust the values above to your liking and re-take the same picture. Do so until you are satisfied with the picture.
