Thanks for the input. I've found that I really dont need or like the bulkiness of the 1D. So the samll form factor of the d7000 is a plus for me. And any suggestions for a lens?

Have you held the D7000? That's a substantial difference in size.

Look out for the new 50 1.8 coming out next month. It's supposed to be under $300 and a dramatic improvement over the existing one. The 35 f2 is also popular.

I want to switch to nikon before I have anything significant invested in canon. You guys think I'll be happy with a D7000 and a 35 1.8 + 85 1.8 over a 1Dc+Tamron 28-75+135L? I shoot people

Also how does the sb-600 compare to the 430ex?

I would say go in an try them out. The 35mm 1.8 is fantastic, and I love having 2 card slots. The D7000 is a solid camera, I think it's great for people shooting. I second the 50mm 1.8. Should be about $220, and the example shots look great. The 85mm 1.8 is brilliant too, but I like the 50mm on APS-C sensors as a focal length. If I'm really trying to separate someone from the BG, I'm using the 135 f/2, but that's more than the D7000. I think the D7000+ 35mm 1.8 + 85mm is a great start.

@dgr- I have held the d7000 and I really like the feel of it. If I had the budget I'd get the d300s though. I'll be looking out for the 50 1.8.

@anlenke- Are you shooing with the d7000? I like shooting at longer focal lengths so I think I'll like the 85mm. Thanks for the advice. I'll have to use the 35 to see if I like it.

I do. The Nikon 85mm is at least as good as the Canon one. I prefer the SB-600 over the 430EX/II because of CLS capabilities. Just as Canon is just plain ahead of Nikon in video, Nikon takes the cake in flash versus Canon.

Honestly, id get a used D300 if you want the ergonomics or get the D7000

the D7000 has better image quality than the D300, the D300 has slightly better focus and a slightly tougher build...

---

Speaking of, i just got home from playing with the D7000 and the 18-105 (they didnt have anything else decent to stick on it) I quite like the control layout on it (Though the ISO control will take getting used to..i usually set it to something and anticipate when ill change it as it is..)

I tried to fool the D7000's AF by focusing on strongly backlit subjects and tiny things and didnt really manage to do so...Now i did it in a store, and not DIRECTLY against the 7D...but it seemed to do pretty well

what Tim?I think their biggest is the Think Tank Airport Security...

I can't remember already

I figured you might remember! It's a great bag, pretty huge, a child could sleep in it! I keep my lenses on their ends, including the 70-200 F2.8 VR II! I have two bodies, three lenses, four flashes, four battery packs, memory cards, diffusers, snacks, a bottle of water, random things in top like cleaning things, and there's still room for a couple more lenses! I also have an assistant to help manage it :) Great bag.

That's the exact setup I have. D7K+35+85 is a great setup. The 35 is my everyday, walk around and street lens (it's a 50mm equal on 35mm format) and the 85 is mostly for portrait since it gives an equal of 127.5mm to separate the background from the subject or I need the reach in street photography where I don't want to be right up on my subject. I might get the new 50mm 1.8, but I'm not sure what I'd use it for at this moment (I'm thinking maybe for street photography as it's right in between). I prefer primes, but I can see myself with an 80-200 f/2.8 in the near future.

thanks for the input razeus. I really enjoyed looking at the street photos from your flickr. Couldn't find any taken with the 85 though?

Ya, it's getting light use.

Trying to practice portrait (with my girl and son as test subjects) in the meantime.

On the D7000, I think the 50mm 1.8 will be a great middle you can use both as a street lens and a portrait lens. Or at least, I do :D

Hello!
Couldn't think of a better spot to ask on the forum, so I'll put this here (Sorry for the long read!!):

I came here looking for some lens help.
I'm an amateur photographer, with about a year and a half of shooting experience. I've only ever had a couple paid gigs (shooting friends cars), but I only do this for fun anyways so I'm ok with that!

I have a pretty particular subject preference, but I have been known to shoot just about anything.
My main interests include (in order):
-Automotive
-Animal (Reptiles in particular, mine especially)
-Landscape
-Motorsports (action)
-Portrait
-Everything else

Right now my equipment consists of:
Nikon D60
18-55mm VR F:3.5-5.6
55-200mm VR F:4-5.6 w/ Hood
Nikon Small Bag
4GB SD Card
1 Battery
Camera Strap
Sunpack 8001 UM Tripod

I have a Lowepro Photo Sport 200 bag on order, scheduled to be here in early June, and I can't wait!
http://www.lowepro.com/photosport (external link)
Planning to add a shutter remote, and circular polarizer eventually, along with an extra battery.

Sorry for so much to read, but my understanding is the more info I provide, the easier it will be for you to help.
At the moment I'm looking at a couple lenses, a higher max f stop short to mid range lens, and one lens to replace my 18-55/55-200.

-For the higher max f stop short/mid, I'm looking really hard at the Nikkor AF 50mm f/1.8D. It's an awesome value at just $135 retail... My understanding is the 50mm f/1.4 is far and above a better lens, but it is also 3-4 times as expensive. I am a broke college student, so value is HUGE.

-For the "universal" lens I'm looking at both the Nikkor AF 18-200mm VR f/3.5-4.5G and the Tamron AF18-270mm F/3.5-6.3
Di II VC. At first I was definitely attracted to the Tamron, for both the 70mm of extra zoom, and the $480 price tag after rebate (on amazon). The reviews are great, except for area: focus. Supposedly the autofocus on the Tamron tends to be much slower than average, and sometimes focusing entirely improperly. This worries me, especially for any type of moving subject situation. The Nikkor on the other hand has nothing but good reviews, and is tried and true. Only problem? The $830 price tag... (on amazon)

So this is where you guys come in... My inexperienced mind needs some guidance! I'm pretty set on the 50 f/1.8, unless someone has a better suggestion. I do however need some serious advice on my universal lens choice.
Thanks everyone ahead of time!

Max

Not a fan of large zooms. I would actually recommend going wide with a 16-35 and then long with a 70-200. Then you'll have your 50 in the middle. If you cannot afford it all at once then build up slowly. I wouldn't waste the money on a mega-zoom with a variable aperture.

The 50 1.8D in my experience is a bit soft wide open. There is a new 50 1.8G being released next month, hold out for that one.

I wanna get the smaller one... the Takeoff that can be converted to a backpack...but right now my priorities are filters.

in fact I just ordered some from Helen's Company :)

I, like you, am in university, so I get the bit on costs. If I were you, I'd look at purchasing the 50 for portraiture, but TBH, it sounds, ,for more of your needs, the 35mm 1.8 is a better choice. With cars, you want something wider, generally, so you can get it with the 18-55, but the 35mm is going to be a lot sharper and better with color. You sound like you want to shoot all kinds of things, which isn't very budget friendly ("everything else"?), but, fortunately, none of the top ones have to have a lens with super fast AF. The Tamron and the Nikon are not very different in terms of AF speed that it'll make a significant difference for you I don't think.

I started with a D40 + 18-55mm in the summer of '09. Right away, as a college student, I knew I had to get paying gigs to support what I wanted; better equipment. I bought a 50mm 1.8 (which I still have), and did a ton of portraits. Everywhere. All the time. It was all about versatility for me, which, from the looks of it, doesn't sound like a 50, but the ability to control the DOF that much made such a difference. The next bit of kit were cheap flashes (Vivitar 285HV's), and I was really able to push my photography. There's not much you can't do with a DSLR, 50mm 1.8, and a couple of vivitars. That said, if you push yourself, and you're a little crazy, you can end up with a typical college kid $2000 car with $30,000 worth of equipment in it ;)

Your subjects are so wide you need all the major lenses really - wide, standard, zoom, macro. I think you need to tell us what you mostly shoot, or mostly want to shoot, rather than "everything".

What does your current equipment not do that you need it to do?
