^- its still a good shot, the light might have worked against you in that anyways..a ND filter and exposure blending would have helped IMHO

In that case i was lucky thats all...Thats on a D3100 BTW

I do gotta admit the sensor in the D3100 is a freaking peach, i think it has more dynamic range or something than my 7D, im just noticing a lot of stuff at low ISOs

Great point, would anybody say the 35 is a better lens than the 50 other than focal length?

yes AFAIK, in fact I think almost everybody says its better than all of Nikon's 50mm lenses  but then if you really want 50mm...wait for the new 50mm f/1.8.

if the 35mm is an indication, that lens should be awesome as well :D

Thanks! Unfortunately, I don't know what any of that means... In due time.

I've heard GREAT things about the 3100, many say its not far off from the D90(which will be my next body).

Well, I've been thinking about it, most of my automotive shots were shot at well under 50mm, probably closer to the 20-30mm range, I think the 35 would be a much better fit. Sounds like I found my fixed wide max aperture lens.
The rest... now that still a problem. I'm really starting to look hard at a "mid-zoom" camera, for instance a 16-85, or a 24-120, or a 18-105. What do you guys think about lenses in that range? And what kind of image quality can I expect out of a lens in that range in comparison to my current lenses?

It depends, Personally i love the 35mm but i still wish it was a little longer

I tend to go for longer lenses...The 35mm is a very good handy lens tho

Take two steps closer, or use a 50mm and take two steps back!

It depends which 50mm. The 35mm is sharper than the 50mm 1.8D, and IMO the 50mm 1.4D, the 50mm 1.4G is a little better build quality, but the sharpness is about the same at 1.8 really. The bokeh of the 50mm 1.4G is probably the best because it has an extra aperture blade, but not worth the cost difference for most. I just sold my 50mm 1.4D to make space for the new 50mm 1.8G, which likely will be better than all of them, with the exception of losing that little bit of aperture to the 1.4G. I'm not terribly concerned, especially with the price difference. I think the 35mm 1.8 is built better than the 1.8D (and will AF on your body, and is very close to the 50mm 1.4G.)

Why are there so many similar Nikkor lenses, and do the letters "D" and "G" mean anything as such?

5D & 7D (both gripped), 24-105L, 100-400L, 15-85, 50 f1.8, Tamron 28-75, Sigma 12-24, G10, EX-Z55 & U/W housing, A1+10 lenses, tripods, lighting gear, etc. etc.

The 24-120 I don't suspect you'll be happy with; very expensive, and a 24 is a 36 on the D60 or D90; not wide enough I would think. The 18-105 is going to be a step up from your lenses you have currently, and I would think probably would cover your needs pretty well. The 16-85 is nice, optically a step up again from the 18-105, but only get that if you're really using the 18 on your 18-55 a lot. If you're really in the 20-30 range, I don't think it's worth the extra money.

I've got a gripped D90 with an 18-105 if you'd like to purchase it :D

I prefer the 35mm and then 2 3 steps forward..than 50mm then backwards..there are times where you just can't go backwards.

with wide we can always crop a bit afterwards  reason why I sold my 2nd 50mm hehe

Yeah, the D lenses are digital lenses that have aperture rings on them still so you can manually stop down (and I hang on to so I can use them with my older film cameras). The newer "G" rings only have the focus ring on them...

I was going to ask "what on Earth would you shoot with that thing?", but plainly, you can't shoot anything on earth, it'll have to be farther :)
I have a 1200mm mirror lens I've used twice, it's nuts. Cool for some things though.

True enough, i do have situations where getting a bit farther back or closer is hard, IE here i was in a booth at a restaurant and my 50mm is too darn long
