Im not 100% on a D700, Think its a great camera but i do shoot a lot of wildlife and that where the D7000 or D400 is a superior choice because of the more pixels on target thing..

KenjiS wrote in post #12358320 (external link)
More or less to actually go through with it...

I would save the money and not do it for the D7000 and wait to see what the D400 has to offer. The grass isn't always greener and I have owned both cameras.

Are you still pondering?

I loaned out a 7D from CPS for a wedding I am shooting in a week. Of course I'll have my 5D2 and 1D3 with me as well. I'm doing it just for sh*ts and giggles, but actually also to get a gauge on what might be the AF system in the 5D2.

I'll let you know if I think it's a piece of crap compared to the 1D3 or D700.

I loaned out a 1DsMKIII for the one last Sunday and it worked famously. FF, 21MP, GREAT AF system. It was fantastic. Didn't use my 1DMKIII all day long. Of course it's a little dated and I wouldn't dare actually buy it, even used, for $4k.

What's 4k to you Nick... loose change  ;)

I wish.;)

Why spend 4k on it when we all know the 5D3 is right around the corner and will most likely be better in every regard except build?

Define around the corner. I'd be shocked to see it this year.

Around the corner...just like the D800 is...which is to say probably not any time immediate but not that far out.

Of course none of us actually know. I certainly am not harping on all of this.

I may be in the minority here but both lens are NOT worth those prices. There is a sharper 24-120 f4 lens but cost twice as much.

Nikon also has a 28-300 you can find for under $1K used. That lens is sharp but does suffer from barrel distortion because it's so "mega" ;). That distortion is easily fixable in LR and other pp apps. If I was force to pick a mega-zoom I would get that, buy it used and deal with the distortion later.

anlenke wrote in post #12358835 (external link)
I don't think the 24-120 (the f/3.5-5.6 or the f/4) are worth it, especially on crop sensor.
If I had to break it down on a scale of 1-10, 10 being best, the lenses you have now are about a 3. The 18-105 is a 4.5. The 18-200 is a 5. The 16-85 is about a 5.5 or 6. Primes like the 35mm 1.8 are 7.5 or 8. Lenses like the holy trinity are 8.5, and the ludicrously expensive 24mm 1.4 and the 200 f/2 I have/have used are 9-9.5. Feel free to debate this one ;) but that's about how I see it.
So you think the 18-200 is actually a little better lens than the 18-105? You would be the first to have indicated that so far.
Sounds to me like the 18-105 might be a very worthy upgrade, at only $399.99 retail, and some great versatility. I'm assuming your rating are 100% based on image quality.
Also, you rate the 16-85 significantly higher than the 18-105, is that solely because of the increased IQ at the 16-18mm range, or is better throughout focal lengths? Sorry of this is a stupid question, but I seem to be getting some mixed information across the forums.
And you're not kidding, with the 24 f/1.4 at $2200, and the 200 f/2 at $5100, those are a LONG way off.

I don't know that the 28-300 makes sense for him; he likes shooting wider than that, and is on a budget, so for a lens not to cover all of his needs and be $900 or so used, doesn't seem like the best option IMO.

Took the words right out of my mouth about the 28-300.

Here's the comparison for you monk3y:
Here's the 1200mm on my D90, which makes it about an 1800mm @f/11. The second shot is the shot I got out of the camera...not the most sharp or contrasty, but kind of fun to play with. The lighting was changing constantly (the clouds move super quickly!), but you get the idea.
:D

Not a crop. Mirror lenses take a while to settle; I'll have to take an image for you when I'm not running out the door to go to work. Tethering/remote triggering works best for not shaking it. Still, it's not really sharp.
