1DsIII is silly money. No, the obvious alternative now is D700.

(between today and mid-2012) actually the D800 (or whatever it is called) is supposed to come out between 2010 (when I bought my D700) and 2012

Nothing wrong with the camera, just my own OCD. ryan - my flickr

Whenever you decide to enter the market will always be the wrong time. There'll always be a new model "about to come out". So buy something that on its own terms is a good camera, that won't suddenly be transformed into a heap of junk when its successor comes out. At the prices we're talking about I'd say get the 5D2 if high resolution is important to you, or the D700 if all-round good performance albeit with lower resolution is what you want. If you want FF but need good AF for action shots then it has to be the D700. If you're shooting in a studio and high resolution is far more important than AF then go for the 5D2. They're both very good cameras, despite the way people like to polarise the discussion. But remember, once you start buying lenses and accessories you'll quickly get trapped into whatever brand and sensor format you chose, unless you have VERY deep pockets. 5D & 7D (both gripped), 24-105L, 100-400L, 15-85, 50 f1.8, Tamron 28-75, Sigma 12-24, G10, EX-Z55 & U/W housing, A1+10 lenses, tripods, lighting gear, etc. etc.

How people avoid focus shift when focus and recompose with f1.2 lens? .....Lucky? Gear, New and Old! RAW Club Member

I made my choice years ago and will need quite a shove to change it. But who knows? - I might if the product is good enough. Agreed, I'm only holding off because well... the 5DII and the D700 are both really long in the tooth and the replacements are coming either the end of the year or the beginning of the next...Neither of the two bodies really is 100% what I want, and I dont have the money anyways so I'm content holding off Gear, New and Old! Nothing wrong with the camera, just my own OCD. I know most people say not to worry about waiting (which I agree with), but It's been 6 years since I got my D70s. So if I screw up the one upgrade after this long of no lusting over any upgrade at all, I'd be seriously pissed. haha. I have an offer for CAD$2300. It's much better than the projected $3000+ price of D700's replacement. When the D800 is released expect a price tag of $3499 and early availability to be similar to the D7000 release.

I dont expect $3499 except if a dealer is gouging, MSRP is likely to be about $3000, I dont expect Nikon or Canon to price the D700/5DII replacements out of the current range (IE not more expensive than when the D700/5DII launched) Gear, New and Old!
