yesterday I went to a Nikon showroom to try out a few bodies and lenses that I've always been hearing nikonians boasting about. Even though I didn't bring them out for a field test, I find it refreshing as Nikon is really VERY different from canon. (Apart from the customer service and professionalism, Canon sucks here, Nikon is really pro.)

I'm not sure how people find Nikon or Canon (just this 2) but they give me really different feel...a few superficial observation:

1. The layout is so different. Nikon seems to be very complicated at 1st glance. That is what I was given the impression when I just pass by show cases in camera shops. But when I actually spend time to try them out, I find that a lot of settings I can intuitively set around my fingers. Just a press of button, plus some knobs turning, I can easily set a setting.

2. The Nikon higher end series are quite ergonomic to hold...but I have friends who hated it because they are too big. So that is subjective.

3. I find the D700 and D3 series have very bright viewfinder. I'm using 5D2 so I presume the D700 should be my equivalent.

4. Nikon systems have very little tweaks and accessories that I find it quite sweet to have. Eg. their lens cap, lens hoot, button placement, available buttons, LCD cover, GPS etc. These are really good to have but of course they are not absolutely must.

Overall on my 2nd visit to the Nikon showroom, I have much better impression of Nikons stuffs. So much so that after I stepped out of the showroom, I told my friend I have a "Nikon experience".

PS: I could have a "Canon experience" too if I've not spend my last 20 years using canon ^^

I've had D700s for 6 months or so, i'm used to the layout but the Canon button and UI layer is way better IMHO.

Now that I'm used to using a Nikon, I find myself disliking Canon's interface.

"Apart from the customer service and professionalism, Canon sucks here, Nikon is really pro"

Are you saying Nikon is BETTER in this respect? Doesn't correspond with my experience, or those of others I know or have read. One person here changed from a D70 to Canon, not because of any merits of the respective cameras but because of the way she was treated when she sent her D70 in for a repair.

well...the Nikon showroom people at my country is really more professional than the canon ones. Not only the guy there is more knowledgeable, there are also a whole range of equipment there for you to test. I went there twice and the same guy was there with the same range of equipment and service.

As for canon, they just put some low end models with some higher ones out to entertain the general public. All the 1 series are not available and only some popular L lenses are there. Even so, the L lenses are locked up. There was once I asked them to bring out a L lenses for me to try and the guy (who looks like a student on vacation work) told me I cannot test at all since its in the window. I told them my friend came here to test and why was he able to?

In fact I have reason to believe that canon just hire some part time students there to entertain us. Not only he cannot answer my questions, they do not seems to know a thing and would rather drive me away to make their vacation work easier. I definitely don't imply that all Canon showrooms do that or Nikon does not do that at all. But at least if you are here, you probably will wanna choose Nikon service.

And yes...after that guy drives me away, I was really considering getting a Nikon set in case canon got too cocky to service me, a 20 over years loyal client.

PS: to be frank, I've never really need to send my canon gear for repairs until digital age where I have to keep getting my sensor clean there.

Here we have 2 Camera dealers, 1 does Nikon/Olympus/Panasonic and the other does Canon/Nikon/Olympus, the pricing at the Nikon-centered dealer is usually equal or actually better than online (B&H/Adorama) whereas the Canon dealer usually has a modest markup on most Canon lenses it seems

The difference is stock-wise, more Nikon stuff seems to be stocked at both dealers as opposed to the Canon stuff, At least in the more premium or lenses that I'd actually desire to buy

And both dealers also stock a selection of Tamron and Sigma lenses....Both dealers have good sales staff on the whole who are friendly and knowledgeable..Though both have guys who know their pro stuff more than the other folks..

Theres also a local Electronics store that deals in Canon's pro stuff, and actually has a fair selection, however their pricing and sales staff need some training (I saw them trying to sell the 50D in their ad as a full frame camera, I even went and told them about the error and it was STILL sold as a "full frame" dSLR for MONTHS, the Tamron 200-500 is listed as a 28-300mm lens and a bunch of other big egregious errors..Most of their staff don't know the difference between the Canon 70-200s either...Which is sad..the rest of the store knows TVs and Audio stuff really well, their photography department just doesnt know their arse from a teakettle in my experience)

the Tamron 200-500 is listed as a 28-300mm lens

If it's also priced accordingly I'd snap one up! But obviously for those of us not living in big cities we have to put up with what's available to us, and I would take that very seriously into consideration when making my choices. Down here in Belize we have no dealers anyway, so it's a question of how we're treated when we need attention from the US. So far Canon wins convincingly on points.

Lol, No, its $799, And I pointed it out a couple times its a 200-500 not a 28-300 to the staff who have kinda derped on it...

Never used Canon or Nikon's actual service centers though..
