1D series bodies are a completely different story.

I never say never but if I were to either buy or switch to Canon, it wouldn't be anything other than a 1D series. They're well built and extremely sexy!

I see that's the difference between Canon and Nikon... Nikon at least share some of the Top end awesomeness in its middle end gear. Build quality, AF system, Flash etc.. from the D3/D3s/D3x are basically the same as those found on D700 and D300.

while Canon only reserve their best features for the 1D Series which costs an arm and a leg :(

About to puck up the 17-55 2.8. Anything I should know?

I've used a 1D3 and 1D4, both were very solid, and quite heavy. The D3 about the same build quality, and the D700 is close but not quite there.

Canon? If so, drop it and it'll likely break beyond economic repair. I have two or three broken Canon 17-55's in my cupboard. Since you're probably talking about the Nikon check out the fred miranda reviews.

I agree, Tim. When you get to the pro bodies it's just preference, as both brands are very solid and really great cameras.

I love my D700 but I'm thinking of stepping up to either a D3s or whether is around the bend in full frame bodies.

The main reason is because as much as I love the D700, I hate the grip and for me the grip is essential. 90% of of what I shoot is in vertical orientation and I also shoot with a flash bracket. Once a flash bracket and long lens are mounted, you can feel the body and grip shifting and flexing a bit. There's nothing that Nikon can do and that's the way it is, but it bugs the crap out of me.

now that you mentioned it, I have the habit of holding the camera by the grip sometimes and with the 70-200mm it does flex  but I don't think I'll spend more than double the cost of the D700 so that I could get a fixed grip on it

Well... for me it does go a bit beyond that but that's really enough for me to take the jump.

I look at it this way.

Anything that makes me stop and think "man, I hate that" every time it happens, is worth spending the money to eliminate that problem. Considering how much I use my camera and how much I shoot vertically with a 70-200mm lens, it makes a difference. I also like that the D3 bodies are slightly smaller than a D700 with grip and that too feels very good in my hand.

I have some other peeves and reasons to switch but I'm also not taking my credit card out yet. I'm going to wait and see what Nikon is up to and then make a decision sometime after the new year.... I think. LOL

haha... yeah if you can afford it then why not :D but I think since you got a nice camera, just wait for a while maybe Nikon has something nice to offer you in the coming months :D

as for me I am fine with the D700... I can live with the flex and I usually use an UWA when I put it on tripod so not really a big deal too :D

I assume you're talking about the Nikon. I use that lens and I'm impressed with the quality of pix I get out of it, the build quality is outstanding and it's very convenient to use. It is heavy though, it's not really a carry-round lens and I'm going to sell mine as I've bought three primes to replace it; a Tokina 17 and Nikon 24 & 50mm lenses. I think if you're a professional it's just about perfect for DX, very fast AF and very usable.

Ya, I'm aware of the weight. That doesn't bother me. If I'm getting into weddings and such, I need something for low light with varying focal lengths. ...how much are you selling the Nikon 17-55 for? PM me.

I'm very similar, If i have an issue with something, when i first notice the issue, i will continue to notice and dwell on the issue..as time goes on it will tick me off more and more till i finally fix it..

IE I really hate the 7D's focusing screen only rendering f/4 and slower properly, I really hate the size of the 7D's focusing points, I really hate the vertical grip on the 7D because its a ^$&%&$# to select focusing points, I really hate not having a 70-200 f/2.8....etc etc etc...

Like you im waiting to see what Canon and Nikon are up to...

But appreciating your camera's capabilities is more fun than criticizing its flaws... So I usually just shut up and use it more hehe after all We all know everything is a compromise :)

I have been pretty happy with my gear... I haven't even tried doing Micro adjust on any of my lenses... Basically coz I don't know how that's maybe why I don't have any focus/sharpness issues too hehe

I am doing this as a hobby though unlike some of you... So I try to enjoy it as much as I can with the gear I have :D

I normally don't bother either unless it's pretty obvious. (i.e. my old D7K + 70-200 issue)

I don't go looking for issues and I don't enjoy finding them but they are there.

I recognize them and make mention of them but regardless, I'm always making comments about my love for Nikon gear and how for me, they offer a better product then Canon.

No camera or system is perfect and it's important to know limitations (mechanical and optical) and work with and around them.

I spend much more time shooting and having fun than I do paying attention to design flaws.
