Not getting defensive at all. Me, an awesome photographer? That's hardly the case, but I'll take any compliment I can get!

You are a great photog. I really enjoy your stuff.

I knew there was going to be some backlash, but it's not like I switch gear with every change of the season. But even if I did, I guess it's my money, my choice. Ah well. Honestly, I had a blast shooting Nikon.

that's how I feel. It's nice that you are willing to share your situation but it's not mandatory.

Yeah, I know. I had it coming. I think you always kinda had a feeling I might switch back, especially when I was talking about the Canon primes before Nikon came out with the new G versions. I am happy to get the 135L into the lineup and overall this feels right.

Because I feel much the same. I miss the canon lenses. I'm not ever going to feel differently, unless nikon gets over that blasted nervous bokeh that everyone pretends doesn't exist.

But the cameras...I still love the D700 more than anything on the canon side.

Thanks man. I'll admit I feel a little embarrassed. But I am comfortable in that I have never bashed either brand. I'm pretty sure I never came off as being a fanboy. I try to assess gear with a level head. I think each brand has a lot to offer so whether you use Nikon or Canon, it's all good. It's just the tiny nuances that sways me towards Canon. Of course it helps that Canon is all I shot before switching so I feel like I am coming home.

That said, you can bet your behind I'll be watching the Nikon Rumors for the D800, D4, etc. These are definitely exciting times for everybody!:D

If you keep consistent about this, then you will stay a valuable resource as well as an entertaining member. Too many fanboys around here (and other forums). It's hard to get a balanced review anymore.

I wouldn't feel embarrassed Nick. I really wouldn't. If it's in your budget and doesn't cause you any hardships, then there's nothing else that matters.

I still want you to buy some leica though :lol:

Nicksan, do you mind sharing when you are swithcing back? I have been a Canono user for years, and recently, I love Nikon's concept on their camera bodies. I really want to try the other side. But maybe before I do it, I want to see your thought. What makes you ditch the D3s/D700 if they are 2 stop better than 1DIII and more consistant AF ....

I already switched back.

As to why I switched back, as I mentioned in another thread, perhaps I should do a write up of my experience. It's a very specific scenario. Namely, low light + low contrast. Yes, most if not all cameras struggle. The 1DMKIV being top of that list.:D However it's no walk in the park for the Nikon bodies. They are slowish to acquire initial focus and sometimes struggle to do so at all with moderate contrast levels. To be fair, I ran the same test on the 5DMKII's outer AF points and they equally failed. I am supposed to get my 1DMKIII some time this week so the results will be truly telling since the 1DMKIII was always great in that situation in the past and all 19 points are crosstype points. I think Canon did something to the 1DMKIV to make it stronger for action/sports photography but sacrificed low light / low contrast performance. Even the 5D2 does better in that regard. (Center AF point of course!)

I tested out the 24L MKII last night and I immediately noticed that focusing was much faster than the 24G. IQ-wise, I am not sure yet. I need to test much more. I like the Nikon 24-70 better. I think the 70-200 versions are about the same, thought I like the IS system in the Canon better because it looks more steady in the VF. Sigma 50 & 85 shoudl be the same regardless of mount. I won't really miss my 14-24 and it will be replaced by the 16-35L MKII.

That's my story and I am sticking to it!;)

Nicksan, please do so. And send us the link. I would love to learn from your experience. You may save me a trip switch-to-and-back from Nikon. Thank you!

It's February in NYC so there's not much happening. I would never do this during the "shooting season". NEVER. But right now, it's a perfect time to do something like this. Whether it's a waste of time or not really depends on the individual. It took me about 2 days to ship everything out. I price my gear to sell so it was pretty painless. It's when you try to milk the last dollar from the the sale is when you spend a long time staring at your ad/auction/whatever. So no, bot a big deal at all.

Is it "gear-headed-ness"? That's mildly insulting for those who have switched. Maybe it was exactly that when you switched. I don't see that to be the case with me, but you guys can say whatever you want.

Yeah. I get that. Whether I use Nikon or canon, I can take "good pics". I don't think that's the point though. It's about consistency. It's about using the best tool for the job, or what you think is the best tool for the job. Of course a part of it is mental. If you think a piece of gear can do a better job, then that certainly helps. Whether that's reality or not is a different story.

I gave Nikon a try for almost a year. I went back to Canon. I don't have to justify that. I needed to find out and again, the best way to do so is to use the stuff. I did and now I am back where I started. I don't see anything wrong with that.

That said, you won't find me bashing Nikon gear. You know, the same way I really never bashed Canon gear. I already know I'll miss the high ISO noise handing of the D3s. That camera is amazing when it comes to that. No competition. Zero. I lose more than 2 stops going back to the 1DMKIII. Yet I am going back. I think that's telling...

I don't really want to quote your whole post but I don't want people to take anything out of context.

The sale thing is just personal preference you know, I barely get time out to shoot let alone f around with the posting, taking product pictures, shipping, man it's just painful.

For those who switched just to switch, let it be insulting. Sometimes it's more than a popularity contest then anything else I think. Regardless, I don't think that's why you switched. But, if you read your second and third paragraphs, it all reads like a gearhead post to me. Or maybe, unfortunately, it's all about getting the "job" done which in a way is sad because I don't think that's what it should be about. Too much time testing, cropping...I've been there, I wish I never went there. It's funny though, you're switching to get a camera that focuses great and that's exactly why I switched, or at least the catalyst for why.

I dunno, I suppose I come off like a dick right now but I just scratch my head at all the back and forth stuff with certain people when the output is exactly the same.

I'm just as ****ty as I was a year ago, but I know my camera works.

Anyhoo, please don't take offense, if you were here in real life and we could have a conversation, I'd tell ya the same thing and it would probably come across less insulting

Again, not really all that painful. Just snap a photo, and post it. I'm used to packing stuff and I have Fedex on my way to work so it all worked out.:D

If that's how you see it, then so be it. I think people who know me would never say it's a "gear-head" move. I've only ever switched once to Nikon and I am back to where I started. Testing gear is part of the game. I want to make sure my gear is in tip top shape so that I can deliver the best photos to clients or for myself. We all pay good money for our gear. Why not make sure it's doing what it's supposed to do? I don't obsess over it. I go through the calibration thing and then be done with it.

You are entitled to your opinion so that's that. People have different reasons to switch. I gave mine. If that's not good enough, then I don't really know what to tell you...

Anyways, the reason I stayed with Canon is that I can adapt Nikon glass to EF. ;)

Canon 1Ds MK III and Nikon 14-24 @ 14mm. Welcome back Nicksan! :)
