^^^^^^ yes yes we have all heard rumours etc. But when will it be released is the question???

Speculating about something that does not have a release date is pretty pointless

The specs aren't surprising. If it weren't for the natural disasters over there, we'd have the new releases by now as predicted by Rockwell (now that, is surprising). The specs are expected if you want a D3s successor.

Logic would say that the Olympics in summer 2012 will play a big part in release schedules & availability for pro cameras from both Nikon and Canon.

Maybe the Canon 1Dx was announced so early because they had an idea what Nikon might be doing? And if I remember correctly, Nikon tend to have stuff available pretty fast following announcements - so a January announcement could see cameras available as early as February (somewhat before the 1Dx is expected).

D4 specs look promising. Now let's see what the price will be!

I expect they'll price it below the 1DX, as that will be its obvious competitor.

5D & 7D (both gripped), 24-105L, 100-400L, 15-85, 50 f1.8, Tamron 28-75, Sigma 12-24, G10, EX-Z55 & U/W housing, A1+10 lenses, tripods, lighting gear, etc. etc.

Well, the D3s was at 5k+ right? So I'm guessing closer to the 1DX price point.
I like that they increased low light sensitivity. I felt that was lacking on the D700, D3, and D3s. Still, only 9 crosstype AF points eh? Boggles the mind.

I'm seeing that the 1DX will be about 6k, so this one will either by 4k to more directly compete with a lower camera model or it'll be about $5,500 (I'd think they'd make it a few hundred cheaper because their glass costs more, so this would offset that issue).

I just have a hard time believing that this camera would replace the D3s, it doesn't sound like there's anything in this camera to replace it, so I hope they lower the price to have room for a real D3s replacement.

I would assume the D4 is going to be the D3s replacement. Of course I don't know that for sure. If that's the case, then it can't be less than 5k. Probably closer to 6k.

I think it means 9 crosstype AF will still work at f8. It will have a lot more crosstype AF point in total.
If I remember correctly 1DX has 0 crosstype AF will work beyond f/5.6

Is this a place (thread) where a current Canon user/owner can come talk about Nikon and a possible switch and not get ridiculed or ostracized?

Maybe I just need to own both a 5DMKII and a Nikon D700? Looking at the signature above this post, I see ching owns a Canon and Nikon. Two lenses each, and a flash. I could do something like that.
I don't hate my Canon gear at all, never thought of owning both...

It's safe here
Some of us started with Canon and get attached to this forum

I was spoiled by 7D AF and wanted a full frame body with good AF that doesn't cost $5k. So I switched ;)

Thats exactly what my issue is right now. My 5DMKII as you know doesn't have the great AF system that your 7D has, but I can't leave this camera, its too awesome elsewhere. So I've been on this Nikon crusade to see what I can do about it. The D700 looks like a great fix for me over in the Nikon world. You've given me inspiration that one can live in both worlds. I just need to do a few more jobs and get some funds to do it, lol...

So how do you feel about the whole Canon vs. Nikon debate with your two cameras?
Have you used a lot of lenses on each side to compare fairly?

I looked at it and thought the same thing, 11fps and the ISO ratings certainly seem in line with a D3s replacement more than a D3x one...
