Who would buy a D700 when the D800 is available for about the same price, other than someone with an underwater housing for the D700?

People like me that want higher fps in FX mode and can't afford or don't like the extra size of the D4.

According to Nikon there will be no price drop on new D700s as they will be in production alongside the D800 so the used price might not dip that much.

I thought the D700 was being discontinued because of the new Japanese battery regs. Are they still going to produce them for the non-Japanese market?

Assuming price wasn't an issue not many would skip on all the other improvements of the new sensor because they don't "need" 36MP.

I was sort of grasping at straws there. Someone would've come along and criticized the statement of someone's computer not being able to handle 36MP files all that well. And there aren't many other reasons tbh. It's a nice camera and deserves a nice send off when it's officially discontinued.

Hellooooooo Niiiiikonnnn!

This was pretty much the last lens keeping me with Canon (except I do kind of want the 18-135 for some strange reason) since Tokina is releasing a 70-200 f4 with patents filed for the same lens by Nikon. The wait until I can pick up that D7000 is gonna feel extremely long.

I was only going by what was posted at NR. Nikon wouldn't Pre-announce such a thing. ;)

I know Nikon has already said they are not discontinuing the D700 (besides in Japan).

I was just referring to this post:
http://nikonrumors.com …n-the-us-next-month.aspx/ (external link)

Since it already has dropped in price in some locations it's only a mater of time before the price is reduced in the US.

I see what you are saying but the price over here has not dropped yet, still the same as it has been for the past 12 months.

Now from Thom Hogan:

Feb 25 (news and commentary)--Dealers on Friday got some new pricing from Nikon, specifically on the D700. The new suggested price is soon going to be US$2199 (currently US$2699). But here's an interesting kicker: there apparently won't be a minimum advertised price (MAP) associated with that, which would mean we'll likely see someone drop under the US$2000 mark.

May second D700 was a refurb. Got it a year and a half ago for less than $1800. No biggie.

I'm seriously considering replacing my 5D with a D800E. What lens would people suggest as a replacement walk-around zoom lens for my 24-105L?

5D & 7D (both gripped), 24-105L, 100-400L, 15-85, 50 f1.8, Tamron 28-75, Sigma 12-24, G10, EX-Z55 & U/W housing, A1+10 lenses, tripods, lighting gear, etc. etc.
