Looks like the Nikon EN-EL15 shortage has begun. Some third party on Amazon is selling them for $99. Most other online locations seem to be sold out.

This seems to me a major "own goal" by Nikon.

5D & 7D (both gripped), 24-105L, 100-400L, 15-85, 50 f1.8, Tamron 28-75, Sigma 12-24, G10, EX-Z55 & U/W housing, A1+10 lenses, tripods, lighting gear, etc. etc.

I saw someone post a link on another board to an eBay seller getting $219 each for them. Six had sold at that price and there were four left. I'm surprised the chip hasn't been cracked yet, IIRC the D7000 was the first body to use this battery and it has been out for a while.

Wow, $219. I guess if someone is desperate enough.

Someone also has a RRS D800 L plate up there for some ridiculous markup claiming they're backordered into the next century.

They probably sold everything and didn't realized how screwed they were. Sucks for them!

I'm surprised no-one has mentioned the rumoured D600. Full frame, 24MP, no internal AF motor so you need lenses that have them (all mine do). Dual SD cards (boo) HD video, announced late this year, priced around $1500.

To me it looks like slightly lower end D700 replacement. So long as it has a good AF system this looks like the D700 replacement everyone wanted, though slightly lower end, with the D800 taking the slightly higher end and the D4 being... I'm not sure. Sports or harsh weather I guess.

I saw the rumor several days ago but Nikon rumors are even less reliable than Canon rumors and I don't see the point of discussing a piece of gear that doesn't exist. The only rumors that are close to accurate are those about a week before the announcement. A body such as you mention would be a big mistake, at least one without an AF drive. That renders a lot of lenses useless that function fine on the D700.

The D800 rumours were accurate from months out weren't they? For people who have very old Nikon lenses the in body drive is probably helpful, but it's a legacy thing, people who've bought their systems in the past few years have no use for it.

Predict something long enough and it will come through but people seem to forget all the rumors that never came through.

Legacy lenses? Nikon still sells a lot of AF-D lenses and there are a lot of macros out there that won't work on a body without an AF drive. None of the several macros I own will work on a body without the drive so I'm just supposed to run out and spend several thousand more just to replace perfectly good lenses?

Maybe you just shouldn't buy the D600 :p

I'm not either way but knowing how Nikon has worked in the past I seriously doubt they would strip the AF drive out of any body I would be interested in. When I made the mistake of switching systems four years ago I sold some great lenses that I had owned for 15-20 years that worked great on every film and digital body I owned.

I'm sure at some point the cost of the 35mm sized sensor will come down to the point of making entry level bodies possible but along with the AF drive they most likely would be stripped of other features I find essential and loaded down with things I don't need like auto and scene modes.

24MP FF for $1500? Shenanigans.

Those specs and price will be modified over time and when Nikon finally releases something that matches the rumor earlier blog entries will be scrubbed from the site. Lather, rinse, repeat.
