Well, I might be picking up a d800 today. Local camera shop says either today or early next week.

Here's hoping!

Cool! What lenses are you planning to equip it with? I started with the 14-24mm, 24-70mm, and 70-200mm. I like the 14-24mm, but am now planning to sell in favor of the Zeiss 15mm and 25mm. Also planning to sell the 24-70mm due to lack of use. Nearly all my shots with the D800 thus far have been with the 14-24mm and 70-200mm, even though I've made a few concerted efforts to use the 24-70mm; I guess I just don't shoot "normal". ;) The 70-200mm VR II is awesome; a definite keeper for me.

I will be selling my 14-24mm and 24-70mm...if anyone is interested just shoot me a PM. Just thought I'd give you folks here first shot at it, since you've been so helpful getting me started on my Nikon journey. The 14-24mm is going to get discounted, because it has suffered a cosmetic scuff on the barrel (grrr ).

I've ordered lenses in the past, and shipped them back fairly quickly after concluding they weren't for me. So, this has definitely been the dumbest move I've ever made with camera gear: buying the 14-24mm and 24-70mm and then taking more than a month (past the date of returnability) to come to the realization that I'm just too much of a Zeiss-freak to be satisfied with them.

My plans are to replace the 14-24mm with Zeiss primes 15mm and 25mm...maybe even the 21mm. I don't have any plans to replace the 24-70mm range other than just keep my Zeiss 1.4/35mm on the Canon 5D II.

Don't need either one of those. Wish you had a 35G though. ;)

You're breaking my heart. That D800 with the holy trinity of zooms? That's a dream setup for me. Are you keeping the D800?

Those two zooms you're not happy with are two of the best zoom lenses ever made. Either you got bad copies, you're a pixel peeper, or you're very very fussy.

From his post I gather he's a member of PLA.

BTW, if anyone needs a D800E there is one on eBay for the incredible low price of $7000 USD.

Why zeiss over 14-24? Most reviews favor the nikon over the zeiss except at f2.8

Sell the 24-70 if you don't use it much and keep the 14-24 with the new zeiss!

More birding today with the 70-200...

That's a dream setup for me.

That's just the thought I fell for (even though I had reservations). It seemed like a great setup: 14-200mm in three excellent lenses. But, the reality is I just don't shoot much in the normal range. 14-24mm and 70-200mm covers 90%+ of my shots. I've tried and tried to give the 24-70mm some use, but everytime I do, I'm yanking it off for the 14-24mm or the 70-200mm. I'm absolutely keeping the D800; best camera I've ever used/owned!!!:D

Thanks K6AZ, you nailed it.:) Those zooms are quite excellent...but I'm afraid that once I start adding the Zeiss primes to my Nikon bag, the zooms are going to start collecting dust.

Tim, I'm not dissatisfied with the 14-24mm and 24-70mm at all. As you say they are extremely good zooms. I've just decided that I've won't be content until I've added Zeiss zf.2 lenses to my Nikon bag. And I'm concerned that once I do, the zooms are just going to sit in my bag collecting dust.

It would probably be a lot more prudent on my part to hang on to the zooms until I add the primes. Then I my usage patterns can make the final determination. In the meantime I'll just focus on getting a few of my Canon lenses sold. I'm glad we had this discussion. Thanks for the thoughtful feedback everybody! :D

Which Zeiss are you referring to? I'm starting with the 15mm and 2/25mm. Both of those lenses are both sharper, better corrected for distortion and aberrations than the 14-24mm. The 15mm samples on Lloyd Chambers' site are mindblowingly sharp, even in the extreme corners, which is incredible for that focal lenghth. The 25mm appears to have a strong 3d rendering quality to it, which appeals very much to me. Since these are both new (15mm doesn't even ship till May), I'm not sure what comparison reviews you're referring to.

But, beyond all that, the real answer is I'm just a big Zeiss fan. I've rented/tested the 2/100mm, 2/50mm, 2/28mm, and own the 1.4/35mm. I've loved them all. I like the special way they render color and bokeh. And more than that, there's just something incredibly cool about the all-metal construction and buttery smooth focus ring that adds another level of enjoyment in my shooting. So, I'm a Zeiss fan, and I'm getting real with myself about it.

BTW, here's a sweet little video someone made with the 2/25mm: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hec_ifsHsik (external link)

Nice one Dan! The 70-200mm is a blast to use! Here's a little animal action from my quick run by the zoo (the skin detail at 100% is incredible!):

Love the elephant shot David. I was referring to the zeiss 21mm as the comparison. I cant wait to see what your thoughts are on the 2 lens zeiss combo. I have the 21mm for canon right now and like you said the build quality is astounding!
