Where is the Gold ring!
Wonder how many stop VR it's gonna be?

No Nano coating either but I can live with that as long as the optics is great.

Are you sure you don't want to modify this statement a little bit? Always right?

 I mean when he says something WILL happen. Which he's saying now.

He's not always right about "50% chance bla bla will come out in 2013," etc. :P

He's made several D400 predictions that he later scrubbed from the site when they didn't materialize. That's how he keeps his percentage up. ;)

4 stop.

No, 5!!! Come on, let's aim high! =p

I don't think that pic is representative of the final lens, either. No way it won't have a gold band and be Nano Coated.

It appears that Nano coating is represented by the gold ring. No nano coating, no gold ring. I'm ok with that as long since the Nikon 50mm f1.8G does not have Nano coating but it is much better optically than the 50mm f1.4G. Nikon is probably looking at saving or reducing the overall cost. I'm just glad they add the VR instead of crippling it without one.

Nano smano, I think that's just a gimmick to sell more lenses. Some of the best IQ I've seen from Nikon lenses has been without the N. Not a selling point IMO, either the lens is good or it's not and I suspect the 70-200 f/4 will be very good.

Definitely would consider a 70-200 F4. Can't wait to see some samples with it.

I walked around at the zoo today for about 3 hours with the D800. Had the 85mm 1.8G on it the entire time, and it was on my BR strap. My hand did get a little tired shooting with it, something that never happened with my 5D2. Nothing major though.

I don't completely agree with you since the Nano coating, similar to Canon's flourite coating, does a good job in controlling flare and provide a better contrast.

That should have been a fairly light set-up with that lens.

All lenses have coatings to protect from flare and to provide optium IQ. I have the 18-35 (for now) and I can't get it to flare even with the sun in a corner of the frame. Contrast is good, the problem is distortion at 18mm. I could name many other Nikon lenses that do just fine without this magic dust. I recall when Nikon announced this new coating and the emphasis was on marketing, in fact in their financial reports it was spelled out how this new name for coating would reap big rewards. I don't need it and the lack of it won't be a factor in my decision to buy the new 70-200 f/4.

I used a d800 with that lens today, I borrowed them from a local shop. Nice light lens, great bokeh, fast.

Does that lens works on FX?

Yuppers, the picture I posted of the church a few days ago was shot with the D800, EXIF is intact.

Cheap standby until I decide where to go, I've seen a few 17-35s that are tempting. It will be the 17-35 or 16-35 depending on the availability of the 16-35.

I forgot to mention it was gripped as well. It wasn't the weight so much as the ergonomics. My hand just cramped up a little. It wasn't a big deal, just the first time I've had that problem.

Rick, its a great lens. I was going to get the Sigma 85mm 1.4 at some point, but now I'm not so certain I'll do that because the 1.8G performs very well.

Just don't get the 17-35 I'm looking at trading for.
