Eff. Just traded/sold my Sigma 85 for a Nikon 85 1.8. Egads. Gotta put money on bills though. The 1.4 kills the 1.8 though and I just know it's going to suck

i was looking at the 85mm, i'm selling the 28mm and looking at getting it.

do you like the length? I do know the 28mm is way to short.

I love the 85 focal length on any camera/crop. I actually really love my lineup right now 17/35/85/150

If you're doing portraits, I think the 85/100 is the way to go, hell 150 does awesome too!

In for the 17mm, love me some UWA. Looking for a tokina 11-16. The rokinon/samyang/vivitar 14mm also looks interesting.

The new sigma 85mm is amazing! I tried it out at BH a couple days ago and was so impressed by the sharpness of the lens. I would pick that over the Nikon any day

So i'm looking to buy a new lense, kind of for everyday stuff. Since i have my d7000 on me all day i dont really want to go around changing lenses all the time.

I like taking portraits and candids, I want something with a high f stop, 2.8 and below. I also like wide angle.
My budget is 500$
i'm considering the Sigma 28mm f/ 1.8 or the Sigma 17-70mm 2.8
also wanted the nikon 35mm 1.8 but it seems to be sold out everywhere and when i spoke to the guys at BH they said that they're not getting any for atleast 3 weeks

portrait and wide angle usually don't go together very well.

the new sigma 28mm 1.8 are Macro enabled lens now, i have an older 28mm i'm selling but for portraits i would go longer like a 50mm or an 85mm. I took a bunch of pictures with the 28mm and unless you're 3-4 foot from the person you get ALOT of scenery included. Its a great lens its just too wide for what i wanted.

Just posted this in the "Reversing Ring" thread but figured I could post it here, too.

D7K, 50mm/1.8 reversed with BR-2A, 1/30th, f/1.8 (set with the manual ring), iso 640

it's fun to play around with.

Nice pic! I wondered if you had something else other than the Tokina. I bought one myself a couple months ago, but I'm a bit disappointed in its wide-open performance. My Nikkor 17-55/2.8 is sharper and with better contrast at 17mm and f2.8 than the Tokina at f3.5. I haven't used it that much yet so maybe I should try it stopped down a bit. Your pic looks like it was taken at a small aperture.

you're comparing a $1500 lens to a $300 lens, of course the nikkor's going to be a bit better, lol.

Me too! In fact, I did! But, at the end of the day it doesn't make sense financially for me right now.
In a way, all that crap is nice, makes you look at your output based on it's photographic merit and not automatically love it because it's sharp and the bokeh is pleasing.

Try the 35mm f2 used and see if you like it. If it's not wide enough or fast enough, you know what to do.

I like the distortion effects from wide angle portraits.

Take a look at this photog's website: http://platonphoto.com/portraits/politics/index.html (external link)

I think the lighting is what's best, not necessarily the perspective.

Yes it's stopped down a lot :D Your 17-55 may in fact be sharper but at f8 the difference will be minimal although a gratifying nod towards the 17-55.

It does do wide open fairly well though
