You can't save a RAW image, you can have a "sidecar" file that stores information as to what changes you made, but you cannot write a RAW file with your changes included, otherwise its not RAW anymore.

As for me, I save my images from my 50D to a quality of (I believe) 87 in Lightroom. This pegs a "normal" 50D image usually around 4-5MB.

I use "save as" and it's almost always as the highest quality JPEG, "baseline optimized," although I'll occasionally save a complexly edited image as a PSD file with layers in case I want to be able to either see what I did in the layers or further edit.

If I do a save in PS5 I'll usually use quality 8-10 depending on the file size. I find it virtually impossible to see any difference in that range using baseline optimized.

Probably right, but I just go ahead and blast up to 12. I've got plenty of room left on my hard drive, so I figure why not.

Oops I got my scales mixed up. Forgot that PS5 used a 1-12 scale. I typically use 10, sometimes higher if its an image with little noise and/or detail

OK, there is a question here -- you say you are getting an "out of RAM" message -- is that exactly the message you're getting? If it is your problem is less with the file type and more with either too little memory or some related problem.

But if your problem is disk space, you should be clear of that and make some forward plans for your image library, such as picking up an external drive for long-term storage and also (this can be important) installing a large internal "data drive".

In other words your file format won't stop either problem in the long run since you are getting the error in the "here and now".

Ya thats what i normally do, and i just call the saved file something else. I think this last week i used Save As and it actually made changes to the RAW file to. i dont know why, i think i may have done something.

What you're describing to us is a disaster waiting to happen. Can you afford to lose all your photos?

okay so im working on some photos right now and when i "save as" it creats a JPEG file which is cool, but it also makes the changes to the RAW file too. So when i open the RAW file the editing i made to it. Why, i dont want the RAW to change. THank you.

No, hang on here.

When you say your Raw file what exactly are you talking about? Is it a file with a .cr2 extension?

When you first open the .cr2 file in Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) to bring it into Photoshop, any changes made in ACR are saved, so that the next time you open that same .cr2 file by default it will have any changes previously made in ACR already "done." This has nothing to do with saving files in Photoshop, it's the default way ACR is set up to work.

Yeah, we need to distinguish between editing in Camera Raw and editing in the Photoshop editor. Camera Raw won't change your Raw file, but it will save an xmp "sidecar" file with all your Camera Raw edits. So that may be what you are seeing. The thing is you can change all that back simply by hitting the Reset button in Camera Raw.

When you open a Raw file from Camera Raw into the editor, you are no longer working on the Raw file, the image has been "rendered" into what is basically a bitmap image and the edits you make on the image in the editor can only be saved as an image file such as a jpeg, a tiff, or a psd (or other supported file types) but these edits will not affect the Raw file.

So, when you use Save As to create a jpeg, the jpeg will show the combined edits done in Camera Raw and in the Photoshop editor. When you go back to the Raw file, it will show the adjustments made in Camera Raw -- maybe that's what you are seeing and just don't understand what's going on. Just realize that you can click the Reset button and go back to the beginning.

Go ahead and try the Reset and get back to us.
