Although I dont use Flicker (yes I know that sounds absurd) a relatively similar situation happened to me involving gmail several years back.
I never thought that I would have to have a back up mail account etc..I had this email account for almost 6 YEARS, the amount of ppl and businesses that had my address was more than I could ever remember.
Then one day out of the blue it was suspended for "security reasons" I follwed every step found on their website, sent emails back and forth with them. It was never restored. All my tax info and other important saved emails were gone forever.

I would never keep a sole source of important information on a free e-mail service like yahoo or gmail.

Flickr should not be your only copy / back up

Don't try to confuse me with the facts, my mind is already made up.

Flickr, gmail, &c.

All the more reason to have your own domain(s). You may have to change hosts, for a variety of reasons, but as long as you keep backups, you'll not ever lose anything. I've had the same EMail addresses since '97 - have had to change domain hosts 3 times, but never lost any messages, contacts, etc.

The beginner clicks the shutter and says "Let's see what I got." ... The experienced photographer thinks "How can I capture what I see?"

hmm the point of the posts wasn't about backup. He's a professional so he has backup and used Flickr like Facebook as a marketing tool.
The point is the fact that these forums which we invest so must time and effort into to market our services and network can permanently wipe you out without any reason and in this case "can't" or refuse to restore so you have permanently lost all your contacts, feedback/comments (networking) etc.
Facebook does this but they will restore you once the issue is resolved.
I put "can't" in quotes because we all know they have backups but someone is just being too f%^king lazy to go through the process. I know as I do that sort of thing for a living.

The reason I posted this was to get it out there as much as possible hoping enough attention is drawn to it so Flickr gets their act together. Which is why I'm glad that Village-idiot posted the link to the other story.

It was roughly $13.74 and hour in 2005. I wish the average hourly wage was $25; that means I'd be making a lot more than I do now.

Because they found a ready supply of dupes who are willing to sell themselves well short for a few pennies...

Why do I get the feeling that you have no idea what you are talking about?

I dont use flickr either and this post will make sure I dont use it,maybe its time for other users of flickr to come out of the woodwork and tell us their tales of woe and see how widespread this problem is.
I will not follow any links to the site from posters on here just as a small protest, and those that have accounts can complain to flickr that they are not getting the traffic they were before this incident.there are other sites out there time to make them more popular now by joining them.

How would you describe the arrangement Chief?

Do you deny that Getty bought in because they can have access to millions of images for relative pennies?

I think you're the one who's delusional if you think the deal is anything but heavily weighted in Getty's favor.

But this wasn't a failure to renew a pro account, this is apparently an account being completely deleted because of a supposed violation.

Sounds like Flickr doesn't have a soft-delete policy just in case they make an error. Dumb. I've dealt with Internet companies like this before who don't understand that their actions have real consequences to people. That's why I would never use this type of service. I use a web hosting company and upload my images via FTP and keep everything backed up twice.

Flickr is fine for casual family photos just for fun, but I would never trust it for business purposes.

Sounds more in the order of, they didn't like the bandwidth usage and storage area.
They used a simple oops to fix ( for them ) two birds with one click.
