Lens creep on a 15-85

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone with a 15-85 has experienced lens creep? Is it something that is likely to occur over time and worsen? The reason I ask is because I'm looking to buy a second hand 15-85 and the owner mentioned it has developed a bit of lens creep. I'm not sure if I want to get it if it's only going to get worse and possibly become unusable. I've never experienced it before so I don't know how much of a problem it can be.

Thanks :)

I have two for over a year now and haven't noticed any lens creep. I will keep an eye out though and let you know.

Thanks. On a review by cameralabs.com on youtube, the reviewer experiences lens creep and mentions it as if it's normal so I'm not sure how much of a concern it should be really.

well the lens feels pretty solid and the zoom is quite tight. I put mine to good use and so if there were any issues of lens creep, I'd get them. I still have to put moderate effort to turn the zoom ring on my lenses and have had them face down on more than a few occasions.

for the record, the closest I can maybe call lens creep on one of my 15-85s is about a quarter of an inch of zoom when facing down. but there is enough tension within the lens that it does not extract out all the way. the amount it creeps is barely noticeable, at least for me.

thanks sixsixfour, i appreciate you taking the time to check it out. The seller is offering it at a good price and would want to meet up tomorrow, so I need to make my mind up soon. I don't think I would find it too much of an issue, but it's still quite a bit of money.

The loaner I had from my local shop had insanely terrible zoom creep. However, that was their floor demo that has been on their 7D since it was released. So it has been used by thousands of people for 12h/day for a very long time.

My brand-new copy is lovely. No zoom creep at all yet.

I've owned my 15-85 since launch and mine is still tight as a drum. I can hold it upside down at any fl and it doesn't budge.

I just bought a used 15-85mm here on POTN and it isn't even close to having lens creep. The lens is well made and has an even, smooth focus ring.

I bought one off ebay with bad creep. I can return it but don't plan on it unless the images for some reason don't perform to par. I did fix the zoom creep anyways by using a guide I found for a different lens and adapting it to this one. Half of the band goes in the zoom side and half in the focus side and there's 2 spots as you can see in the picture where I could get at the band and remove it if needed, where the band crosses from the zoom to the focus side. You could just put the entire thing in the zoom side if seeing that bothers you but you'd have more trouble getting it out. Fixes the creep completely.

Is creep worth returning a lens for?

Mine has creeped from day one(brand new). From 35-70mm. At 70mm and longer, it doesn't creep , 35 and wider, it doesn't. lol Not bad mind you..just takes about 1 sec to go from 35-70.

Mine too, but in the 24-60 range. I'm not sure, but I think it's gotten worse over time.

I recently rented one for a trip to maui and it had a kind of hump in the middle of the zoom. When carried lens down it would hold for a while until it reached the peak of that hump and then completely drop all the way out. Never a problem unless shooting down on something while manually focusing where it has a chance to creep.

Really enjoyed this lens though. My first time - had it for 3 weeks. Obviously a little slow in low light but perfect range for beach/poolshots in daylight. Next up on the rent list 17-55 2.8 IS.

Good luck!

Creeped on me while doing mild hiking in the desert with the camera around my neck. Haven't noticed anything while stationary.
