I would not call it "deterioration", but rather "failure". If it happened to mine, I would send it in for service.
I don't see the point of paying to fix something that is not a problem.

That way, I have an actual lens lock for when I have the camera/lens on a sling strap..... it just doesn't move. In addition, if I'm set up on my tripod, I can lean the camera at any angle, at any focal length and lock it in place.
