First attempt tonight using 60d with Sigma 30mm F1.4

Settings
F1.6
15 sec.
iso 1600

Had a tough time processing the image. If somebody has some workflows or tutorials they would like to share that would be great. I was all over in lightroom....

Here is an example of a workflow I tried to follow, which came out not to bad (IMHO)

dpbestflow is awesome for workflow, heavy but awesome. or peter krough's book digital asset management.

i like your image here, i feel like it could use a little more contrast and general tweaking but it's all there.

I like it very much! Is the greenish glow near the horizon from aurora or from light pollution?

It is Aurora. I'm lucky to live where we get northern lights pretty much every night. Last night was pretty quiet though.

That's a fantastic result! Really like it.

Lovely shot,i love astro landscapes and you should be more than pleased with this one.
A wee adjustment in curves might help boost the contrast and colour but thats only my personal preference and not a criticism.I tend to go overly vivid anyway. ;)

Thanks for the comments. I tried boosting the contrast but found I lost some of the "glow" or "cloud-like" patterns in the stars that I like. I might just have to play with curves a bit more and I'm not very good with curves. I always end up destroying the image LOL.

Yep,been there and done it. :lol:Its all a bit of trial and error until you get the hang of it.If you use it in combination with levels then its surprising just how much you can manipulate the image to highlight the astro part of it.

I find using a low contrast brings out the stars more naturally :)

QUOTED IMAGE

Very nice photo. Especially for a first attempt. Since you commented about post processing, I just couldn't resist playing around with it. I kind of feel that what I did managed to intensify the star field, which is what I wanted to do. But, it did add some noise and some haloing around the silhouetted trees. You be the judge.

I like it.... actually maybe something in between your edit the the one I did. I'm sure you would have better luck though if you had the original raw file.

Here's something a little more in between your original and my first attempt. You have taken a wonderful photo. In case you have never seen this guy's work, you should check out this website http://twilightscapes.com/ (external link) and look at his gallery of night photos with stars in them. He posts to this forum fairly regularly and he is really good!

Personally i think the original is the better looking shot, much smoother. The edit just looks oversharpened
and noisey.
