...with a vast majority however leaning in one direction.

I agree. I'm just not as passionately against them as yourslf.

Some interesting comments on both sides of the fence. This got me to thinking, if I visit a photographers blog, it's mainly to look at their work....rarely will I ever read what they write. So far, I've never found a blog interesting enough to warrant making regular visits.
Because of the way I interact with blogs, as a business tool, I think they make nice portfolios, always displaying a small sample of recently updated work.

That's what I use facebook for, since I can tag and get even more poeple to see them.

Did you lose Digital Photo Professional (DPP)? Get it here (external link). Cursing at your worse-than-a-map reflector? Check out this vid! (external link)

Yes, Facebook is brilliant for getting your work more widely viewed. Tagging is like manna from heaven for photographers!

Personally I don't think a blog in the way that most have one is essential.

I update my portfolio on my website regularly rather than relying on adding new pictures to a blog. This way potential clients can see all my latest work on my site along with all the other information that they are after. I update it after every wedding and it takes 5-10 minutes max. I can't see the point in having a separate site (i.e. a blog) where my latest work in shown.

As for SEO I post a quite brief news article (for the sake of the masses called "blog") on my website after each wedding and I will appear high on Google for a search for the "venue" and "wedding". Each one consists of one image and a couple of paragraphs. It is by no means a blog in the conventional sense. In fact I only called it blog so for search engines. It is a simple news module, in the style that existed on websites long before the term "blog" existed.

People can see I how often I am working from my availability pages or the news list.

Facebook with its tagging etc allows me to reach a large audience with very little effort from myself and you automatically reach a large audience as the content is automatically pushed to people via the news feed. A blog people have to go to or follow and you are relying upon visitors coming to you. A no brainer in my view as to which warrants more attention.

I'm passionate about doing things right, a perfectionalist that will never achieve perfection because it does not exist and you can always go further, however when a vast majority of blogs are bad you have to look at it like CD did below.

I killed my blog as soon as I realized I'm a terrible blogger. It was doing more harm than good.

MJ I know how you feel, I'm a perfectionist to. More often than not I'll try to do something the best I possibly can than to not do it. Including blogging, though mines not the greatest yet I am working on it.

A lot of people are completely writing blogs off which is suprising to me actually.

I am still not really sure what my blog would be about, I think that is why i haven't posted since September. I don't want to do something that I am not into and I don't want to write about stuff that doesn't interest me. I love photography, I am not the best and I know it, so why share information when tons of people out there can teach it way better than me. And really if people are coming to my blog to learn its not going to make me book more weddings, or is it?

I'm a nature photographer and I have a family. I use my blog to update any new pictures, day trips and general family events. I think it's a nice blend between business and family. Viewers can see the real me. :)

That is funny, i completely looked over that without noticing.

I think I may include more of myself and my family and our shoots in my blog, make it real for people.
