Book Cover Question

Hello everyone,

I have a dilemma and I would greatly appreciate your opinions, advice, and suggestions.

Today I was contacted by a writer from Europe who would like to use a photo of mine for a poetry book (cover). The writer is willing to pay me, yet they mentioned that this book is a self-published project (so, they have a very limited budget). I've never done this before, so I have no clue what fee would be appropriate or if I should charge this person at all (given that they may only publish the book for themselves and a few other copies for a very limited audience).

Also, if I decide, let's say, to do this for free, what should I take into consideration? Should a contract, which clearly describes the terms of the exchange, be signed? For instance, I give them my photo, they have to give me full credit and send me a free copy of the book. Also, since the photo is a portrait, should I worry about the model too? I know I own the photo and the model signed a model release form (it was a TF shoot, not paid), but I'm just wondering if there are other things I should keep an eye on. I want to make sure I'm not going to get myself into any legal trouble later on.

Your advice would be greatly appreciated and thanks in advance!

Correct me if I'm wrong but for a contract to be legally binding there has to be an exchange.
So nothing is free, even if they are only paying you 50c or something.

In David Duchemin's book "vision mongers: making a living in photography" I think it's called..
Well he says a lot of the time he'll ask what their budget for photography is because he works
for NGOs who have limited budgets. And he wrote that sometimes he even gets better pay
than he would have asked for, maybe worth doing that?

Otherwise I don't have experience as far as book covers go.
