Last week, I picked up my first-ever set of strobes and I would like to trigger them wirelessly. I bought a used pair of Elinchrom Style 600RXs, so I figured that the Elinchrom Skyport RX Trigger Set (19358), which includes the Transmitter Speed (19350) and two Transceiver RXs (19353), would be the logical choice. After a little more research, it seems that PocketWizard has released the PowerST4, which is a transceiver that was specifically designed to be used with the Elinchrom RX system of strobes. Two of these PowerST4s and a MiniTT1 as a transmitter and it should equate to the Elinchrom Skyport RX Trigger Set, right? Being new to the world of monolight strobes and wireless triggering, what should I be looking at and why? All assistance is greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

I usually do not have any problems recommending any PocketWizard products if I thought it would suit someones needs. However, the PowerST4 is one product that I would never recommend to anybody, at least not in its current state.

As far as I know, you would need to also buy the AC3 if you want to set up to three different groups of strobes to different power levels. Without the AC3, all the strobes would be set to the same power output level.

You cannot use a handheld MiniTT1 or FlexTT5 to adjust and fire the strobes so that you can meter their outputs. It has to be mounted on the camera and the camera has to be active. With the Skyport, it's not necessary to have the unit mounted on the camera or have the camera active to change strobe settings or to fire them.

The Skyport can control 4 different strobes (or sets of strobes). The PW unit can only control three.

Thanks for your input, guys. It looks like I'll be searching for the Skyports.

In my view, the Pocket Wizard monolight interface connections ST4 and AC9 are intended to give us an option to use monolights with Speedlites.
As Leo points out, by themselves the Packet Wizards fall well short of what Elinchrom delivers with its proprietary solution. (Same for PCB and Cyber Sync.)

Dave, since you got AC9, how do you meter your Alien Bees when using them with mini/flex/AC3 setup?
