I noticed that our British members post their figures in pounds with the little squiggly instead of course the $ sign. What are the different characters that can be found on keyboards depending on which country they are sold ?

I've always used the Alt key on my PC to create special characters but how do you do it on the Mac using the Alt key. I've tried many a times but I could never get it to work for me.
