I didnt know what these were, so I posted in an astronomy forum, and was told that they (the beacons of light) were aurora...

Hmm, I'm going to have to disagree. There wasn't a strong enough geomagnetic disturbance on the 22nd to push the aurora that far south. If there was it would have been national news since the northern third of the country would have seen the northern lights which doesn't happen but a handful of times during a solar cycle, and usually near maximum activity.

While still an interesting phenomenon, they look like a type of light pillar caused by ice crystals to me.

Have to agree,its definately light pillars.Had the same discussion on an astro forum recently too where these light pillars were thought to be aurora.There is also no green glow in the sky which you always get during aurora.
