I recently picked up a Bogen/Manfrotto 3011N with a busted ball head. I threw away the ball head and recently picked up a giottos pan head. The male threading on the tripod seems to be a tad bit bigger than the female thread on the pan head. Is there an adapter for such a thing? I didnt know there were different sizes.

The two common thread sizes for tripods, heads, etc., are 3/8-16 and 1/4-20.

If the tripod's head mounting stud is 3/8-16 and the outer threads cannot be pushed down to reveal a 1/4-20 stud and if the head has a 1/4-20 threaded hole in it, you're essentially out of luck unless you have some tools and know-how to re-drill and re-thread the head.

http://www.manfrotto.us …dapter_Small_-_14''_to_38 (external link)'' might do it; sort of hard to tell from the photo/writeup but it's distinct from their 3/8-1/4" reversing bushings which do the opposite of what you need.

According to the spec's both the Bogen 3011N and the Giottos pan head are 3/8in threads.
They should go together quite easily, maybe one of them has a damaged thread.

You can go to a hard ware store , buy a 3/8 wing nut and a 3/8 - bolt that the wing nut screws on .
Try them and which ever does not go on - that is bad thread .
There are also so adapters on ebay for overseas metric ones .

Thanks for the input everyone. I went to the local photo store and manfrotto makes an adapter that works perfectly.

Oversized image changed to link. POTN max. is 1024 pixels in any dimension.

Looks like a brass reducer for lightstands...?

I wouldn't hang too much weight on that. Brass isn't all that solid a metal.

While you have mating threads, that WILL NOT WORK. You're going to have camera motion at the very least and it is likely to break off at the worst time.

REMOVE THE ADAPTER and find something that will let the bottom of the head be flat against the top of the mounting plate with the proper thread in between the two holding them tightly together. It may mean machining the head to have a 3/8-16 threaded socket, but that would be far better than crashing a camera to the ground.

There are NO overseas metric ones. One thing that has remained stubbornly imperial and likely will always be all over the world when the last inane pint/inch/°F/mile/pound is consigned thankfully to the history books is the camera/tripod bush/screw. They are always ⅜" or ¼" and I guess they always will be.

That is one reason I pay a little more locally .
Someone to talk to and compare items .
You probably could have save a buck on internet .

I find that compared with what you have available on line, locally just doesn’t hack it. Mostly the range is woeful.

The store I go to has a very good selection of things like bags , tripods , cameras , film , filters , books etc . I don't think they hire salesman - If you don't know about photography - you don't work there .
http://www.kspphoto.com/contact_information.html (external link)
They have a new and a used store across street .
I could have saved money on the 2X III by buying on line but paid 499 + 10.25 5 sales tax . I did not wonder where it was , has it shipped yet , have some one at house to sign for it , get a RMA to ship back
How much better is this than the 2X II on a 70-200 mk II mounted on a 7D - here is a demo mk II on a 7D - mount the 2X II snap a couple of shots with it , then the 2X III - we will print while you look around . They did a couple of 5X 7's and an 8 X 10 - I left the store with it .
There are things they don't carry and I have to find on net - last 2 items were a cane-pod and filter stackers .
To me it's like going into a candy store .
