Yesterday the sun made one of it's rare appearances so I decided to try for an hour of shooting late in the afternoon. I found some open water and a few cooperative ducks, allowing me to bring home quite a few keepers. I'll just post a few.

All shot with the 1D Mark IV and 400 f/4 DO IS

The next two are severely cropped which was necessary as these ducks stayed well offshore. The IQ is not the greatest and perhaps not deserving of posting but I really liked the open bill of the Mallard and the wing position of the Scaup.

Wow!
Your making me itch to get out there.
Unfortunately I have to wait about 3 months to see open water.

The two heavy crops do have somewhat less detail, but they are still pretty darn nice and most certainly deserving of posting here. I love this series, Harvey. Beautiful in flight shots, especially 3, 4 and 5. Great clarity in those.

All good even the last two Harv. I particularly like 4 and 5, almost like flipped images of each other. Good to hear you have some sunny weather, I hope it's milder too.

Thanks a lot, Rob. Just find a river with a good current nearby. :)

Thanks a lot, Don. It has warmed up a little, but still nothing above freezing.

Great shots, Harvey. Love this series as well as the snow ducks. Quick question, is there any reason you use the 400 DO over the 500 f/4?

Thanks a lot, Richard. Yes, a very big reason. The 400 DO is 4 pounds lighter than the 500/4. I can shoot it hand held for long periods of time. I generally use my 500 for static shooting from a tripod.

Awesome fliers Harvey... I love the BG in the first shot and the exceptional detail in all of them, fine shooting my friend.
