Thought this guy was an owl at first, so I ran outside to snap a shot. Turns out to be a hawk with some very unusual colouration that's throwing me for a loop.

I've just been told it's a leucistic Red Tailed. Way too cool!

Nice find and shot! Yes a leucistic Red-tailed Hawk.

EDIT: I'm not sure any more about my ID. Chuck makes a good point about the tail and wing feathers.

Thanks everyone! This fella's been hanging out for a couple of weeks now, but all I've ever seen was it's white body flying past my house. That's kind of why I kept thinking it was an owl hanging out around the place.

I'm hoping a get snowed/iced in over the next couple of days here so I can bundle up and go looking for it. I'd love more photos now that I know what it is and how rare they are. There's speculation on another website as to if it might be a Red Shouldered instead. So, I'm going to see what I can do to get a breast shot of the fella.

I'd be willing to bet it's a leucistic Red-shouldered Hawk. Tail banding is wrong for Red-tailed and the light/dark bars on the secondaries is a good mark for Red-shouldered. Get some more pics of it if you can. Pretty bird and great capture.

Regards,
Chuck
