The Air Force retired the F-117?

Yes in 2008.

Compared to most of their other airframes that is an incredibly short service life.

Weren't the F-15 and F-16 designed decades earlier?

And if you go beyond fighters / strike craft the planes last even longer. I hesitate to bring up the B-52 but if you want to see good amortization of a design effort...

The 117s were early generation composite and RAM (radar ablative material) technology.

They were life limited and the clock was ticking the second they left the factory.

Not surprising that they can still fly but (probably) never again in anger.

Speaking of the B-52... Did you know that there hasn't been a B-52 built new since roughly 1965?

I just visited Wikipedia. For one thing, I didn't realize that the F-117 had been operational since 1983. That's only seven years after the F-15. I guess to me the F-117 didn't seem like a 'real' plane until 1991 when we all got to see it in Iraq.

The F-15 is expected to fly until 2025 (a nice 50 year service life, right up there with the BUFF) but perhaps an 'early' 25 year retirement of a less conventional plane like the F-117 is not too strange.

Sorry for the diversion, I just had not realized this plane was retired.

The F-35 program is quickly turning into a quagmire of bloat and mission creep. All the branches are taking a good, hard look at SLEP (service life extension program(s)) for the existing fleet.

Marines are already looking at expanding Super Hornet numbers.

Fine with me. Not to get poitical, but the current US gov. runs $3.8 trillion vs. $2.5 trillion revenue. Defense is $900 billion of that number.

Our current enemies are mostly armed with the AK-47 defense system which can be defeated by just about any plane in the US arsenal if you can ID the target.

China is on the verge of 5th generation stealth and Egypt flies F-16s and MiG 29s.

I personally want the F-35 but that's me. Hey Jay, I didn't think the USMC was using the SH's other then the Growlers. Am I missing something?

From Reuters: Link (external link)

The assumption is that C/D models would be superseded by Super Bugs.
