Hi all,

Am looking for a light-ish bag that I can use to take on walks with me. I have been looking at the range of half and half bags which seem to be on the market at the moment. We're talking Kata 3in1 - 30,Tamrac Aerospeed 85 etc.

I want to have a normal bag section for some lunch and a camera part to take limited gear with me. Easy access would be a bonus I suppose so the side opening bags seem like a good idea but I am unsure of how well they would work in practice.

Ideally some means of attaching a tripod should I need both hands free would be good, although not essential as I can get a tripod sling.

I have tried the body in both of the bags I mention above and it fits most easily in the Kata. The body kept snagging trying to get it in the side aperture of the tamrac.

The zips worry me on the kata though, there is always a gap and if you walk in a sandy place that will mean camera gear + sand in storage... this bothers me a lot.

Anyone have any crazy suggestions that will absolutely sell me to something?

P.s. Not keen on sling due to historic back issues, I would rather share the weight on both shoulders.

1st - bad idea having food and or drinks in same bag as camera .
Pick up either a fanny pack or 6 pack cooler for food .
The only liquid that is in any of my camera bags is lens cleaning solution and the small packages of alcohol swabs and there are in water tight zip lock bags
Think tank and several other companies make harnesses that you can clip lens / other stuff bags to .
By the way , the next time you buy gas , get it where they sell diesel and ask for some extra hand wipes .
Tell them you get a half a dozen so you don't have to keep coming in and bothering them .

Thanks for the helpful and pleasant response lol.

I never heard of sandwiches breaking out of a small lunch box and attacking camera equipment :) I didn't say I would be storing drink in the bag either, of course I wouldn't do that.

Wouldn't it be better to assume some degree of competency and answer the question at hand rather than assume idiocy and open with a flame post?

I had this dilema a few months ago. There is so much choice and so many dimensions that it gets confusing. Having limited opportunity to try bags out (no one shop has them all) makes it especially hard.

So my criteria was similar to yours. 1 Pro body with 24-70 on, a couple of flashes, triggers, filters, and a spare battery in one half and another half for general stuff, waterproof jacket and grub. All this in a compact a bag as possible so it doesn't look like I'm going camping for a month. This was my most important criteria.

Result? Lowepro fastpack 200. This fits the bill pretty much perfectly. The only thing is that the camera body is a bit tight which I could say aint a bad thing. Plus, as I use the bag more, it is loosening up a bit so isn't quite as tight.... Only prob for you is it doesn't have a tripod attachment. Could you remove the flashes and fit another lens in.... I'm sure you could unless it's a 400! The top part is a similar size to the bottom part and I will be carrying a 70-200 in it's soft case in there when I eventually get it. As I said, small size was important to me. There are plenty of bags where you can fit an entire camera shops worth of gear in!

Here is a camera phone shot.

Thanks, Mark.

I will see if I can find a local store that stocks them so I can go and try. Looks perhaps a touch too snug for my liking though.

Our requirements certainly sound very similar :)

Cheers,
James

Crumpler 7MDH. Fast access but not as comfortable as backpack

Camera + 5 other standard size lenses or 3 lenses and 2 flash units

Can also fit 70-200 and 4 other lenses if the 70-200 is mounted on the camera. Otherwise only 3 other lenses.

By "standard" lens I mean lenses like 35L, 85L, 100 Macro type sizes etc.

That certainly looks good smorter but there doesn't seem to be room for anything other than camera gear, plus I am not sure a shoulder bag would be such a good idea for my back.

Thanks for the response though.

James Wheeler - - Sorry , I did not mean to insult you .
After 35 year in construction I did not find a good lunch bag or box .
Sandwiches leaked , everything gave off crumbs , lids came off plastic container- thermoses leaked , Coke cans got holes in them - peanut butter , meat , jelly , candy bars all leaked .
This did not happen every day - but often enough to be bad news at lunch time .
I carried an extra pair of socks , mag flash-light , goggles and glasses plus a small 1st aid kit in my lunch kit .
PLEASE - if you have found a way to carry food with other items - post it . I will post on the union web site and most people here would probably like to know since this is about bags .

r.morales - I have never had any food leak from a Clip-lock lunch box (they have a rubber seal which compresses slightly i think) but then I am not in construction and I don't drink coke, eat peanut butter, jelly, or candy bars either... :)

tvphotog - that is an interesting looking one although the slide around storage thing looks a bit too small to hold the camera and a couple of lenses. I will investigate further though.

muskyhunter - not a backpack.. :)

I went with a Kata 3in1-30 in the end and the tripod holder for it. Fits a limited selection of my gear nicely and isn't rammed. Seems well made too.

I went with the 3N1-22 so I can add a tablet later in the year. Good balance between being able to carry a fair amount of gear without being over weight. Its nice because it looks like a normal backpack versus other bags that have camera written all over them.
