Could someone compare the sharpness and overall IQ of the F/4 IS at 100mm to the 100mm F/2.8 IS Macro? I am considering these two very different lens for my crop.

I know the F/2.8 is often said to be on par with the prime lens in it's focal range.

I'd say the zoom is pretty impressive compared to the macro prime stopped down one: http://the-digital-picture.com …omp=0&FLIComp=0&APIComp=2 (external link)

I doubt you will not see a difference between both at crop. However at f/16, 100L IS MACRO gives you better sharpness. The only obvious thing is 100L macro can't zoom and 70-200 can't do life size image.
Choose by the focal-lenght and aperture you need.

from those crops it looks like the macro is a tad sharper, but not by much. i have both, and I think the macro is the sharpest lens in my collection. I love the fact I can frame whatever I want, however I want. I don't run into any MFD issues, which is nice... unless im shooting a bug or something... then I would like the mp-65e ;)

That's exactly my point. The zoom is wide open and the macro lens is 1 stop down..and it's freaking close  What a zoom they made in the F4 IS.

The test results seem surprisingly close, since close up shooting is not really the strongest suite of the 70-200mm f/4L IS lens and is what the 100mm f.2.8L macro is optimized for.

However, tongue in cheek, the 100mm f/2.8L macro will beat the pants off the zoom at f/2.8 and also at 1:1 imagery while the zoom will beat the pants off the macro at 70-99mm and 101mm to 200mm.

It depends what you are looking for. However, I will mention this... my 70-200mm f/4L IS lens is equal to any job you give it. You will never lack for quality when shooting with this lens.
