With the help from members like Dave (tetrode), Robert (TMR Design), and slivr, I got enough information to finally make my BD purchase and bought a 22" Speedotron!

After a few trips to Home Depot, some lost nuts and stripped #6 screws, I successfully did the Norman Speedring DIY drilling project. It was frustrating, but worth the learning experience!

I didn't have enough money at the time to buy the Speedotron BD + Grid at the time, but now that I look back, I should have bought it as a set because the Speedotron Grid itself is $165 (more than the dish itself?)!

I want to ask if there are other alternative grids out there that are priced cheaper, but produces great results? I remember someone saying that Kacey Enterprises no longer makes a grid that fits the Speedotron's.

I saw this 30* JTL Honeycomb Grid (external link) on Adorama that sells for $80, but does anybody know if it fits on the Speedotron?

By the way, would you guys recommend me buying a sock/diffuser for it while I'm at it? Or would that kind of take away from the whole contrasty-beauty dish look? Thanks!

Get a sock (Kasey Ent will work). The sock is cheap and will give you options. It works great with the grid.

I love using a diffusion sock with the beauty dish.

The sock from Kacey Enterprises is fine but it's a very snug fit and something of a pain in the neck to attach.

I would recommend getting the Speedotron sock or another slightly oversized sock because it will allow for a grid like the Speedotron that attaches to the front of the dish rather than being recessed inside the lip. The Kacey diffusion sock isn't large enough to go around the outside of a grid that mounts to the front of the dish.

Thanks! I'll be getting the sock then, since its relatively inexpensive compared to the grid. Would the JTL Grid work with my Speedotron BD, or should I just bite the bullet and buy the Speedotron grid?
