D3100 does offer more features than XS but it is also about $100 more expensive. It is up to you to decide if you want to pay extra for the features. At the same time, XS is a very good camera.

Some pros of the D3100:

11 AF points vs 7 on XS
Spot metering
High ISO
Movie mode
Higher MP count

Yeah definately return your XS. Purchase the Nikon. Carefully unwrap it and invite your friend over.

When he looks away you swing it hard and repeatedly in the back of his head. You then proceed to loot his corpse and pawn his car and for the findings you purchase a 1DMKIV...

Yes go for the Nikon... :)

Sounds to me like the D3100 has more to offer, BUT money tends to be the deciding factor... Bear in mind in the long run depending on where you want to go with your photography equipment and how much you want to put into it, going the nikon route usually tends to cost more since all their lenses and many of their accessories are considerably more expensive than the Canon equivalents. Thats always been one of my biggest beefs with nikon. Why is it they think their stuff is worth so much more?!

It will be tough to return as I purchased it off ebay ,

What I would need to do is :

Sell my Canon 1000D

Then spend about an extra $200 for the nikon.

Is the effort and price worth it?

I'd say go out shoot have fun and get yourself sweet glass. You can always pick up a newer body further ahead in time. Enjoy your newly bought 1000d! It's a good entry level camera.

Nothing wrong with the XS, enjoy it, shoot as much as you can, learn, buy a good lens once you know what you like to shoot most and need most, might be a prime or a zoom lens, use the kit lens and enjoy it until you feel you've outgrown it.

Listen ...... there's always going to be a better camera out there than the one you buy regardless of which camera that is, with money .... sky is the limit! I bought my wife the XS as her first DSLR, she still has it and will not get rid of it for nothing in the world right now, it takes great photographs. I usually shoot with the center focal point so the rest are just extras I use very rarely but someone will tell you you need all the focal points you can get, there's plenty of opinions out there including mine and then your Nikon buddy.

This!

On a more serious note, the D3100 is a better body. It has better high ISO noise, 11 AF points, spot metering, video, and is a higher resolution. It also costs about $200 more.

The question is, as a beginner, do you really care about these things?

Truthfully, the XS is still a wonderful camera in itself. Just hop onto the Rebel XS thread to see some pictures taken by it. Also, the ergonomics on the D3100 is completely different from the Rebel XS. It's personal preference, but chances are if you like Canon's Rebel ergonomics you might not enjoy the feel of the D3100.

And personally, I'd rather take the XS and spend the difference on a 50mm f/1.8. Truthfully, your friend just sounds like a gear whore.

I wouldn't sweat it to much. When I was looking to get my first DSLR I had looked at the Nikon's as well. Holding them just felt uncomfortable. Would the xtra's be worth the discomfort? nope. I haven't had any problems with my XS either. I doubt you'll be disappointed.

Remember you are buying into a system. What lenses do you want to buy next? Will they work on a d3100 (which lacks its own AF motor)?

The XS is a great camera, but to be honest it is nearly 3 years old now. I would not be surprised if other cameras in that price point are a better deal. While you are shopping, have you checked out Pentax and Sony? Sony has just released a great selection of affordable prime lenses that are relatively fast and shrp. The Pentax K-x was pronounced the "high ISO noise champion" last year before the most recent bodies were shipped. I'd definitely shop around if you are having second thoughts. All the camera makers have a lot to offer at the under $1000 price point. If you ever plan to move out of that tier, then it becomes more and more a 2 man show with Nikon and Canon being the clear leaders.

I own a Pentax SLR and a canon SLR, I also own a few P&S cameras along with the Canon XS. I happen to have owned the Nikon D3000 and returned it. Granted it was a great camera but after careful consideration I went with the Canon. One reason was the deal I got, the careful comparison of feature difference, and consideration for upgrading glass and flash.
It takes amazing pictures and offers a very nice selection in lenses to purchase.

I am a gadget "whore" as I also own a BlackBerry smartphone business so I know all about the thirst for wanting the newest and "best" there is. However depending on how serious you are about photography, I dont think you will be disappointed with this camera.
