Green or Recycled Flush Mount Album

Hello,

I'm in the process of going green, using computers that consume less energy, making sure that my halogen spots lights are now CFLs, removing prints as a part of my packages and now just an option, etc. etc.

My question to all here.............

Is there any flush mount album company that is green or uses recycled materials?

For example, formaldehyde, coal and cynaide-based oils are use in the production of leather, which is bad for the environment. I'm now offering "leatherette" covers as standard, and real leather as an option.

But beyond that, what companies out there will use greener materials for their binding, their printed and mounted pages, etc. Any?

Yeah, me either, but if you find something I'd love to know about it!

I offer iPads instead of albums. Since they can be used for many things and are less likely to just be shoved in a closet someday and forgotten about I see it as being a more eco-friendly option even though an iPad itself is not eco-friendly. That's one thing you could consider. It's cheaper than a flush mount album, too!

I don't know...I think an iPad is more likely to be shoved away and forgotten about in less time than a traditional album. Technology changes and fades so fast...in two years 1st generation iPads will be in boxes in the attic along with the Christmas decorations...I think most wedding albums make their home on coffee tables for much longer than that.

To the OP, I've been on the same search for quite a while and the only option that I've found thus far are the albums at loktah.com. I've never actually ordered one though because I have concerns about their durability. I considered using them as a "Green" option in conjunction with my regular albums but decided against that as I learned how easily people get overwhelmed with having too many options.

Well my wedding album got looked at one Christmas then shoved in a closet and to be honest, I have no clue what happened to it! Yes I'm divorced so I don't care about it at all, but even before we separated I hadn't looked at in a looooong time. My digital images I looked at frequently, however. But I'm also a techie so maybe that's why the book was never an interest of mine (and why I don't like making albums so I make them a la carte and too expensive...)

Heeeey! I was just looking at the exhibitors for WPPI 2011 and I stumbled upon a group called Greener Photography and on the website they featured a "green" album company called White Glove Books. There's a whole article about what makes them green and you can read it here: https://greenerphotography.org …light-onwhite-glove-books (external link)

Lights are now CFLs? Man, I hate the cast fluorescent lights give. And CFL's fade in when they warm up. And they have mercury vapor in them. Break one, and that's not very environmentally friendly!

Couture books has awesome stuff for people who are into the current buzzword "green" and think that using a couple less stacks of paper every year will make any inkling of a difference to our planet :p

Actually you have a good point. Just picking a "green" printer or a "green" photo album isn't going to do a rats ass of good to the planet. So for anyone wanting to go this route I'd say if your office, studio, and home aren't already "green" (I hate that word, btw, I prefer eco-friendly) you're pretty much wasting your time.

I'm just now starting the process of moving my studio and office into my house because I have one in there now (yay!) so it's a priority for me to be as eco-friendly as possible because it's entering my home where you could arguable say I'm beyond hardcore about it. It's already an important thing in my life so picking a lab and album company that already practices these things will help. Plus I'm looking to become a member of Greener Photography and that's a requirement to slap that logo onto your website.

Oh, actually, I know them! They were at WPPI this year. I think I may have actually chatted with Dave for a bit while there or else it was someone else high up in the company because he was REALLY into his products! I really liked the quality as well, I thought it was very comparable to Queensbury at half the price. I was considering this company for my higher-priced albums while sticking with my lab for lower-priced albums.

Thanks for the feedback and comment everyone. I'm sure this discussion will come up from time to time.

And yes, I have been changing my business practices to make everything more green. New business cards are now printed on recycled materials. All my lights are CFLs, including 5500K CFLs in my computer room. I'm slowly getting rid of my typical NiMHs and going with hybrid NiMH AA which holds their charge longer. The last computer bag I purchased had lining that is composed of 100% recycled PET plastics (old water bottles). I used to drive all over the place to meet clients. Now I ask if potential clients have a webcam and if they do, if they would consider a webcam conference as an alternative.

I currently drive a vehicle that gets 21mpg, but will be looking to purchase a hyrbrid or clean burning diesel car towards the end of the year.
