i am planning to try and get to around 4 or 5 motor racing events throughout the year (hence the 150-500 sigma purchase recently) so the fps may come in handy

For sports the 7D would be the better choice. It's not just the 8 FPS that is the difference, it's the whole AF system. The 7D has it's own dedicated AF processor with more (and cross-type) points. This will really come into play when you are tracking a subject, the 7D does a great job.

From what i gather i wonder if you really NEED to upgrade from a 40D. What is it about your current photography that leads you to believe that you need an upgrade. Unless you print large prints I can't see any reason why the 40D is lacking.
Personally i'd spend the money on better lenses.
Just sayin

I find my 40D is lacking in noise control at high ISO. The 7D does have noise but more redefined. As I shoot a lot inside dark gyms, I'm always hitting against the noise issue. Maybe the original poster has the same issues as I do. I will say that when I purchase the 7D, my 40D will be hanging on the other shoulder, with a different lens.

Hi,
i have the option to get a 60D or a 7D and all the options seem to weigh up even-ish. i currently have a 40D, 50mm 1.8, 18-200mm Sigma, 150-500mm Sigma, Nissin 622 flash, some triggers and cable releases, etc. so all my current attachments will work on either (i think). i have a varied interest in the type of photography i like as i have only had the 40D for around 18mths i have been doing a little bit of light trails, night exposures and some family shots stuff too but am discovering new things to try all the time. i like the idea of the 60D as it uses SD rather than CF so i can just dump all my images straight to my iPad on the fly and free up the cards (an also see them on a 9.7" screen to see if they are any good) then the 7D has less noise at higher ISO, better processor, and generally seems to be a better choice. but is this going to be replaced with a new version soon? does the 60D have anything that is better than the 7D as i am not fussed about the fold out screen. never done any videography before but will probably want to try this at some point so is one better than the other for that?
sorry its so many questions but i thought it would be an easy choice until i started to investigate!
what one do you think i should go for and why?
many thanks
Alvezz

8 hookers and a ****load of coke... Or you could go for the beast which is the 7d. I mean it's really up to you. Buy what you like to use, most people would never have my lens combo but it suits me.

I'd say the 7d since it's the more pro of the two. Me personally would go for a 7d if I was looking to buy another APS-C.

Thanks for the help guys and gals. Think it will be the 7d as I will not be upgrading again for a very long time and should see me for my needs

perhaps
but if you've had your previous camera for only 18 months don't be alarmed if you feel the urge to upgrade when the 8D or 70D comes out

Probably 7D Mark II. Canon seems to like odd numbers and this is their established naming convention for their single digit cameras.

Get a refurbished 7D from Canon USA. Use an old Canon body...including old flim bodies...to get hundreds off the refurbished price. .

I'd like some hard proof about what you speak. I can find no information that indicates that "an old film body" will get me "hundreds" off the price

Soon after buying the 60D I sold it and went with the 7D (which is what I really wanted originally). Happy with the decision. I would disagree however with the 60D feeling cheap. IMO while the build may be different it feels pretty solid - good weight and fits great in the hand.

What did you shoot with before buying the 60d and why the move to the 7d?

IMO, as long as its an APS-C sensor, there's no diff between a 7D or 60D. The FL is going to get affected when using a EF lens.

I sold my 40D, which i really loved, for a 7D, which i am still climbing the learning curve on. Via CLP the 7D was a no brainer and honestly i didnt even really consider the 60D much. Its a great upgrade to the 40D but imo, a little less intuitive and a bit heavier. But all in all i am happy with the upgrade.

I've had the same dilemma. I think I really want the 7D but I've shot with film and a digital APS. I also have neck problems and the 7D was a little bit heavy. I just don't know how much I'd be able to shoot with it. Plus, I don't really shoot action shots. I'm pretty careful with my gear so I'm not worried about the plastic body. However, for me, the biggest factor is the VF. I don't know how much difference the 96% VF would make or would the articulated screen compensate for that? Also, if I get the 7D, I'd either have to keep the kit lens or buy a lens that, all total with the camera, wouldn't cost more than what I would have spent on the kit.
