I have only had my 1Ds2 a few weeks now and really enjoying the speed of AF and build + that shutter noise!!

As a wedding shooter I would really like to employ the use of the SD card backup that is available, what I was wondering is does this slow down the write speeds a lot as I do tend to shoots bursts of shots at weddings and cannot be waiting for the camera to catch up.

I know there are different catagory SD cards like 4-6-10 and I'm guessing I need a 10 to help with the write speeds or do I??

Help much appreciated.

The camera is just a storage box, it's the gLass in front that makes the image...

The 1dsmkii doesn't have that option. Only the 1dmkiin and newer 1D's have that option.

Well how come it says it has a CF AND a SD slot in the manual, SD being the backup, + the last time I looked it had 2 card slots one fits a CF card and one fits a SD.
I wouldnt have asked the question if it didnt have this option!!!

You can write the same thing to both cards but you can't write Raw to one and Jpeg to the other, that's what was added in the later models (2n and up).

As for write speeds, I know on the 1D Mark 2, the max write speed is around 8mbps so getting a card that can write faster then that won't help with your write times. What it is on the 1DsMk2, I don't know.

Yes the write time is slower for the sd card as compared to the CF card, but from a practical standpoint shooting weddings and that sort of event, it really won't matter. The only time the slow write speed to the sd card is a problem for me is when shooting sports in high speed fps.

I was asking as the digic 2 processor which I suppose can be classed as old tech now has to write to 2 cards instead of 1 and thought that this process might really slow the write times down.

Think I will buy a class 10 16GB SD card and this should last me a full wedding + have good write times.

Yes it can use most cards on the market with the latest firmware updates applied to the body. Now, your write speed will not improve (at least for the 1DMk2) if you use something beyond a class 4 since the 1DMk2's write speed maxes out at 8MB/s or so and a class 4 card is capable of either 10MB/s or 15MB/s (I can't remember exactly, on the card it says 15 but I believe that's the read speed, on the packaging it had stated 10 for the write if I remember right) so having a card that can be written to faster when the body can't keep up won't help you with write times. Only benefit to a faster card would be offloading with a card reader for transferring photos to a computer.

Now I seem to remember using the backup feature a few times and it didn't really hamper performance beyond waiting for the SD card to write out (same speed, maybe the slightest bit of lag compared to shooting only the sd card).

I'm sorry I misread your post. I kind of skimmed threw I'm mistaken it for writing jepg on one arm and raw on the other.

No worries and no need to be sorry, I'm sure I will misread a post (or have) and answer a question.

Excellent! just the answer I was looking for, thanks...

I don't really intend to offload the images as I will just format it before every wedding but if I have a issue with a CF card I know the images will be backed up on the SD.

SDHC cards are so cheap especially class 4 and 6 it makes sense to have one in a camera that has got this option at all times just for piece of mind.

See for me I typically am shooting the SD cards as the primary card since the laptop I work on when I'm in the field and all the systems at base have built in SD card readers which makes life quick and easy for offloading and means one less thing (cf card reader) I have to drag along with me along with the 60D shooting SD cards. Unless I'm doing serious bursting (which I RARELY do, it's not my style for what I shoot. I prefer single well placed frames) I only have the CF card as overflow for when I run out of space on the SD card so I don't have to open the body up if I'm in a tough environment or for when I need to switch cards super quickly where it's 2 to 3 times as fast for me to navigate the menu and switch to the CF card instead of opening up the card bay and physically swapping cards.

Yes it will but it can only read up to 8gig. Don't buy a 16 or 32gig as you'll be wasting the extra capacity.
