Canon 17-40 f/4.0L hood and filters

Does the Canon 17-40 f/4.0L come with the hood?

Does the hood still fit if I put a filter on? If not what do I do?

Yes it comes with a hood and yes you can use filters with the hood in place.
It comes with the ew-83e which is designed for use with FF cameras. If you are using the lens on a crop sensor camera, you can use the ew-83J which is a deeper hood giving more protection.

Finally an excuse to get a 5D! Otherwise I would have to get a new hood, unacceptable.

I just got the same lens for my 5D, it's wonderful, better get the 5D, otherwise it is not a true ultra wide angle lens.

I use it with my 50D. It works great. Good colors, sharp...etc.

To answer the original post I have both hood and filter on it.

Well, sure I will have to get the 5D.

On a related note, to properly use it on the 40D I need to get a EW-83J hood. The best way to do that is buying a lens that comes with it, no?

Yes and yes.

It comes with an EW-83E. Not sure about using a different hood with it.

The ew83J hood is the spec hood for the EF-S 17-55 lens. And I don't know about that "properly" comment. It's just that the "J" hood covers more than the "E" hood.

The ew83J works fine on the crop sensor bodies because the smaller sensor is not using that part of the glass out towards the edges. I use this hood when using the 17-40 all the time on my 1D2, and I used it on the 20D and 50D when I had them. The xxD bodies have an even smaller sensor than the the one series.
If you use the ew83J when on a FF body, you will get vignette at wide and near wide settings, so then it's time to put the smaller ew83E hood on.

The hood designed for the 24-105 f4 IS L works fine on the 17-40 L when mounted on a crop body as well as the one described above that is designed for the 17-55.

ALL L lenses come with a hood; so there is another excuse to get a L

Yes, I did it few time if I don't need the 24-105 and work. Just keep the eye on the hood to make sure it fits right into the position.

The original 17-40L on FF is useless to me.

You can get a different hood but its unneccessary.

too small a hood will work but shield you slightly less well from light that won't hit the sensor (other than from internal reflections etc that you are trying to avoid, hence the hood).

too large a hood and you will see it in the picture.
