Hi all,

We're proud of our precious Bluebirds of course, and so we naturally love to share them with all our friends here at POTN. We still have 7 yearlings from last year's nestings here everyday. But Missy has already begun "encouraging" them to get on with finding their own territories. We see an increasing activity at the nestbox everyday now, tho she won't begin building her first nest of the season for awhile yet. Still, we see them wing-waving and hear their anxious burbling conversations... and we know it won't be too long before yet another nesting season begins.

Here are some latest photos of our family blue. as we're seeing them now...

We're full of anticipation all over again.

...and we hope you enjoy these,

Kenn

Another superb series, Kenn. There is more than one wall hanger in there. Great shooting.

An entire series you could frame, Kenn. This is really fun to see and it's great that you have such a regular crew of subjects :)

Other than providing bluebird houses, how do you attract your bluebirds? I put sunflower seeds in my feeders because my birds seem to like it the best. What is the food preferences for bluebirds? I had a pair many years back, but sparrow took over their home. i'd love to attract some this year

Terrific series Kenn. I've never seen any of these birds but apparently we do get them in Ontario.

Very nice set!

Thanks for all the nice comments everybody. We are getting pretty psyched for another nesting season here and we really do appreciate your good wishes for our Blues. :)

Sue - Bluebirds are primarily insectivores, and the #1 treat for Bluebirds is mealworms. Many other desireable songbirds enjoy them too... (like Carolina Wrens, Chickadees, Titmice, Cardinals and lots of others). Ours also enjoy raisins, suet nuggets, and scrambled egg.

If you want to offer them a nestbox for this season, you should have it up NOW, or asap at least. Because they typically choose their nest sites way before they actually begin building. And since you know you have House Sparrows (the Bluebird's #1 nemesis) you should visit sialis.org for information on how to cope with that potential conflict.
Having Bluebirds nest in your yard is a true joy for any birder. Best luck!

And thanks again to all for your kind replies,

Kenn
