So i noticed my Al Servio AF isn't working. Here is what i am using and what im trying

Rebel XS
TV mode
Tried 50mm 1.8 and 18-55 kit lens
Tried shutter speed of 1/200 , 1/80, and 1/60
Tried shooting outside and inside with plenty of light

AF works in one shot and Al focus when shutter pressed half way down.

Tried taking out the battery and still no luck, anything else i should try?

If you're looking for the AF confirmation light or listening for the beep neither feature is available in AI Servo. When you say not working, what exactly is it not doing?

Because it's constantly focusing ... it never confirms.

What you do get is a flashing confirmation light if it looses track completely.

But it can't comfirm anything as "completed" when it by definition goes on for ever.

because AI servo constantly adjusts focus to track a subject it will never beep at you because focus is never locked. You should notice the focus adjust as you either track a subject or move to a different subject while focus is pressed down.

I understand now. Now I know why the hit rite for panning shots is like 25 to 100 shots.

Thanks!

It takes practice. I get a hit rate of well over 90%.

Back button focusing (external link) helps alot, too. Then you can leave the camera in AI Servo most of the time.

BTW, it's AI "Servo", as you noted in the original post title.

I'd suggest to forget AI Focus even exists. It's not really a focus mode at all. It's supposed to detect if the subject is moving or static, then select the other mode that's appropriate. In my experience, it just slows things down a lot (must admit though, I've been avoiding it for many years, so it might work a little better on more recent models... I'm just really not willing to try it and miss lots of shots again).

I don't like AI Focus either, but out of curiosity tried the 7D's implementation. It has improved a lot since I bought my first EOS camera (the EOS 10).
