Thanks! Hadn't seen that one pop up today....but sounds like it could be pretty substantial for all of you Sandy Bridgers out there.

A good reason why it's not always wise to buy something when it's brand spankin' new out the door!!

I know you already chimed in on my questions earlier Berit, but I have another question. Does this mean both the ASUS mobo's AND the Sandy Bridge CPU's are bust? Or was I just confused earlier and the CPU's are fine. I can deal with getting another P67 mobo from MSI or Gigabyte but I really want the i7 2600k.

If you already have a P67/H67 board, the easiest work around is going to be simply use the 2x 6G ports....and bypass the 3G ports altogether.

Anandtech summarizes (external link):

Intel maintains that Sandy Bridge CPUs are not affected, and current users are highly unlikely to encounter the issue even under heavy loads. So far Intel has only been able to document the issue after running extended testing at high temperatures (in a thermal chamber) and voltages. My recommendation is to try to only use ports 0 & 1 (the 6Gbps ports) on your 6-series motherboard until you get a replacement in place.

OEMs and motherboard manufacturers are going to be talking to Intel over the next week to figure out the next steps. Intel plans to deliver fixed silicon to its partners at the end of February, however it’ll still take time for the motherboard makers to turn those chips into products. I wouldn’t expect replacements until March at the earliest.

If this is correct, then it sounds to me like the CPU's don't need anything remanufactured. It's only the boards that need to be fixed. But since the CPU is no good without a mobo, that's probably why Newegg and other places have pulled the processors as well.

This only effects the 6 series motherboard southbridge chips. So it's a hardware issue on the motherboard. It only effects the sata2 ports.

So, if you only have 2 hard drives, you can plug them into the sata3 ports and all will be good. If you board has additional sata ports from a different vendor like Marvell or JMicron, then you can use them as well without problem.

This error will result in a new motherboard as the chip layout has changed. How the OEM vendors are going to resolve this is currently not known as Intel was obligated to do a global press release, and everyone found out at the same time. So the motherboard suppliers are now stuck having to figure out what to do while everyone who bought the boards are harping about getting a defective product.

The issue is a statistical one. so, it is not a guarantee that your board will fail, but over the 3 year lifespan of the board, a large enough group will fail. If you are looking to keep the computer for say 6 years, then your chances of failure increase significantly. But still not anywhere close to 100%

You have to now weigh the cost of ripping everything out and getting a replacement motherboard with the chance of failure. Hopefully they do it right and offer either a replacement coupon to buy a new board or upgrade to the Z67 chip that doesn't have the issue, rather than requiring you to send in your motherboard (at your cost) and they will ship you a replacement.

it deals with your 3gb sata ports.... nothing else.

Some manufacturers will offer a replacement of the board... or a pci-e sata card to "replace" the ports tha "may" fail over time.

Its a big deal, but not a huge failure.

I have a Sandy Bridge 2500K based system that I built earlier this month and this problem isn't a huge deal for me. I just moved my SSD and HDD to the SATA 6 Gbps ports which are unaffected. In a month or two, major motherboard manufacturers such as Asus and Gigabyte should issue recalls for the affected boards.

The flaw is not in the Sandy Bridge processors themselves, Intel said, but in a support chip that is needed to connect the new microprocessors to the rest of a system.

The problem can cause some connections to disk drives and DVD drives to degrade over time, potentially interrupting the flow of data from those devices, the company said.

I wonder how this affects laptops. I just bought an I5 a few days ago.

A Sandy Bridge i5? If so, ask the maker of the laptop.

Then your affected.

Intel Sandy Bridge CPUs utilize Cougar Point Southbridge chipped motherboards.
Its the only chooser available for SB CPUs.

There is nothing on their website concerning this issue, yet. I will email them for clarification.

You might want to see what port the laptop uses for the 1 or 2 hardrives. I would bet it is 3GB, not 6GB. If so.....you need a replacement.
