I took some photos at a cousin's hockey game a couple of months ago at Westminster Ice. Westminster Ice Adult Hockey League is part of the Anaheim Ducks "The Rinks" program. This game was between Lumberjacks (yellow, my cousin's team) and Team Jack (blue).

It was my first time shooting a hockey game (and the second time shooting any sport for that matter). I used my 7D and 70-200 2.8L IS, shot through the glass boards, as there were no photographer's holes.

Thanks Darcy! I agree, after seeing my end results, I feel like I could have shot/cropped tighter in many of them. That will be for me to try next time. :)

Thank you!

Shot in M, f/4.0, 1/200, ISO 800 pretty much throughout, AI Servo with AF Point Expansion, center point and the point just above for the most part. I really should not have been afraid to go higher ISO, 1600 or 3200, now that Lightroom 3 has pretty good noise reduction. That would have allowed me to shoot at faster shutter speeds to stop the action better. I didn't want to shoot too wide open, so I felt f/4.0 was appropriate. AI Servo tracked rather well. It missed a few times when players closer to me went by or because of the glass.

FYI, shooting at 1/200 shutter is a bit slow for adult hockey. I try not to go below 1/400. LR 3 NR is great! I regularly shoot hockey in a dungeon at 4000 ISO and get very useable images (mind you my Mk IV helps with this too)(see http://christianjstewart.zenfolio.com/jrbraves/2010 (external link) for examples). Also, unless this is a limitation of your lens, try f2.8 or 3.2 to get a bit more light in as needed. Try and shoot so you are at an EV (overexpose) of +1-1.5 and you should be in a good range.

And as mentioned above try cropping much tighter too!

Cheers!

Chris

Thanks Chris! You have some amazing photos!

I know now that I can get away with ISO 3200 on the 7D and NR in LR3, but probably not higher. I'll keep your tips in mind for next time. :)

Some nice pics there, I have a question regarding pic 3, what is with that Lumberjacks stick? It looks like there is a broom handle in the middle of the stick???
