Canon already has a 28-300 superzoom that's outdated thanks to current superzooms, and they charge around $3000 for it. Care to wager what Canon would charge for a 50-500mm IS? Not the $1500 that Sigma charges for their 50-500 OS, that's for sure!

Frankly what I'd like to see from Canon is a 150-450 or 150-500 ish lens.

I have a friend that is a tech. for Canon and I asked him about this rumor. He is not in the know but his reply was "why should we change one of our products that already sells well". "Remember when Coke came out with new Coke. Well their sales dropped." Again he does not know anything but he does hear about new products coming on line when the proto type is made. I'm also going to check with my barber "he hears all kinds of rumors".

Unless your friend is a real good friend and deals directly with the R&D of new lenses or their manufacture, I am probably sure of a few things.
Canon probably keeps it hush hush until it's either close to release or ready to go out the door. Unless the tech is involved in putting them together, R&D or some other closely related aspect- why would they let even their own masses know about it. Knowing that something "new" is coming out will likely keep a percentage of people from buying what is available now.. Letting their employees know that it is coming only represents more chances for that kind of damaging news to get out. I believe that the concept here is called 'need to know'.

Those who do know probably are under a NDA to not disclose, probably at the threat of losing their jobs. Letting the cat out of the bag too early only sacrifices current sales. It does not necessarily increase sales when the new item comes out- -just stagnates the current lineup.

And yes, I used to drink coke till they came out with the new stuff- at which point I switched over to Pepsi. They screwed up because they dropped their current line and basically said 'Here it is...no more of the original Coca Cola'. If they had left both lines in production- they may not have lost as much of a following. But we are talking lenses here- something that can be quantified- not something like Coke, which is a matter of taste..

And yes, definitely check with your barber... And while at it- get with your bartender as well... They hear a lot of things as well. :D

what I would like to see a 50-400 (or 500) version from Canon

The Sigma 50-500 OS is quite good. IQ almost matches canon 100-400 and Sigma has much better range.

+1.
Just got my Sigma 50-500, but the weather has been quite crappy as of late..

This is true, if the market price of the 70-200 2.8 IS mk1 is any indication, the decline in value will be very, very slow. The mk1 has held its price, despite being completely outclassed by the mk2.

Actually its price is now several hundred dollars below what I ever remember seeing it before. It's now within a couple hundred dollars of the f/4 IS, when historically it's been about $600 more.

No doubt that the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM (external link) will eventually get updated. I expect this to happen by 2013 or 2014 as there are older L lenses that need to be updated first

Pre-2006 L primes that are expected to be updated from oldest to newest

1993 EF 400mm f/5.6L USM (external link)
1996 EF 200mm f/2.8L II USM (external link)
1996 EF 180mm f/3.5L Macro USM (external link)
1996 EF 135mm f/2L USM (external link)
1997 EF 300mm f/4L IS USM (external link)
1998 EF 35mm f/1.4L USM (external link)

Pre-2005 L zooms that are expected to be updated from oldest to newest.

1995 EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM (external link)
1998 EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM (external link)
1999EF 70-200mm f/4L USM (external link)
2002 EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM (external link)
2003 EF 17-40mm f/4L USM (external link)
2004 EF 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6L IS USM (external link)

Note that L zooms probably sell more than L primes.

I doubt it. The 100-400 is around $1400. A $7K lens is not a replacement. That is assuming that this is even a replacement.

I don't understand what it means to have a built in TC. Is it really a 100-200??? Is it f/4 at 400mm?

5Dmk2, 40D, 10-22, 50 f/1.8, 24-70 f/2.8L, 70-200 f/2.8L MKII, 28-135 USM, 2x 580EX II, lots of other lighting gear.

The earlier announcement I saw was vague. Now I see that it is 200-400 without using the 1.4x TC. Seems like a great lens.

I wish they indicated at what price this would be introduced. Is the 100-400 discontinued? at 2,500-3,000 USD, they would sell like hotcakes.

There is no way in hell that the 200-400 will be a replacement for the 100-400. If anything, this new zoom will kill the 400/4 DO lens and maybe take away some sales of the 500/4 super tele.

There has been no announcement of the 100-400 being discontinued. Even if they did stop making it, the 70-300 and the new 70-200/2.8 IS mk II will be the lenses that killed it, not the very expensive 200-400. To get an idea of what the new lens will cost, take a look at what Nikon charges for their version, which doesn't have the built-in 1.4x.

AF-S NIKKOR 200-400mm f/4G ED VR II Lens = $6,799 @ Approx 7.4lb (3.4kg) without a built-in 1.4x teleconverter. Don't tell me Canon will sell at half the price of Nikon?

Canon lenses that share the same 100mm pupil diameter as the 200-400mm f/4 are the EF 200mm f/2L IS USM (external link) ($5,700) & EF 400mm f/4 DO IS USM (external link) ($6,145). Slightly larger at 107.14mm are the EF 300mm f/2.8L IS USM (external link) ($4,500) & EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II USM (external link) ($7,000).

It's 200mm f/4, 250mm f/4, 300mm f/4, 350mm f/4 & 400mm f/4. Flip a switch to enable 1.4x TC and you are 280mm f/5.6, 350mm f/5.6, 420mm f/5.6, 490mm f/5.6 & 560mm f/5.6 along the same zoom ring range.

I would certainly buy one of these since I don't shoot at the long end very often. I'm still waiting for my 1Ds MK IV. :)
