I would certainly buy one of these since I don't shoot at the long end very often. I'm still waiting for my 1Ds MK IV. :)

If it was 2007 I'd do the same thing too.

Well, it's 2011 and you certainly can unload the glass you don't use. ;)

Too slow my friend. Just too slow! And I don't use zooms!

As I often have a passing interest in this lens I was surprised by the North Light Images rumour statement on February 13 that there won't be a direct replacement for the 100-400.

13th We hear (thanks) that in the programme to replace 'the main L lenses', Canon's design target is 65MP on a full frame sensor. Also that the 100-400 won't see a direct replacement and that there is a new 24-70 on the way (no indication of IS) and it too is aimed at giving a very noticeable jump in performance over any exisiting zoom.

Hopefully this is false just for distraction.

If Nikon releases a 80-400 VR II expect Canon to reply equally.

What kills me is that the 100-400 doesn't need a complete redesign. A flourite element and updated IS would be sufficient.

I also demand weather sealing!

still no credible info on this? I know we're guessing, but does everyone think we'll see the 400mm f/5.6L IS or the 100-400mm first? The prime is older but zooms seem to have more mass market appeal so I'm assuming we'll see the 100-400 mkII first... which would be better anyway if it can match the IQ at 400mm of the current prime.

400mm f/4 and the f/4 zoom are cool and all, but they're in a whole different class, not really a "walk-around" lens

100-400mm IS II will happen by 2013 or 2014.

400/5.6L IS would be by 2015 or 2016.

And now, to restart a dormant thread:

Something's happening, anyway!
Any bets on when it gets here?

This would cause me to retire my Bigmos, big time!

I'm consdering the 100-400L instead of 300 4L or 400 5.6L for flexibility with 1.4x and 2x teleconverter. It would save me a lot of $$$ plus the quality is superb.
