A friend of mine is building his own photo booth for use at receptions and was wondering what camera and software combo would be good (he is a DJ). This would be basically for the Bride & Groom sendoff, good wishes from the guests kind of thing. Short video clips of people wishing them the best. He is wanting to use a green screen with it and showing it up on a 40" LCD, everything being controlled by computer, of course. After the reception, he would just take all of the clips and put them together on a dvd for the couple as part of his entertainment package.
The programs he has looked at so far are: 123 Video Magic Pro and something from Breeze Systems. He has not purchased a camera yet or the software yet, although he has looked at a few Canon & Nikon DSLR's (video capable of course).
I do not have any experience in this type of photography/videography, but I told him that someone on here might and would post the question. Would a DSLR w/video be better than a video camera?

Any advise/input would be appreciated.

Thanks

There are quite high quality video cameras now in the CCTV Box camera format. Essentially a color, high def security camera. They can run on POE, record to hard drives or DVD and are really cheap. I have been researching them for a few weeks now, for another application, but have learned enough about them to not discount them out of hand. For close in work, say 10-15 feet and with good light, they would do quite well.

Thanks for the reply, I passed along the information. I think he may be leaning toward getting a higher end video camera setup. He still has a lot of research to do though.

Thanks again

Glad to help. But the secret of "higher end" cameras is, these box cameras use exactly the same sensor and capture processors on the board inside the box. The higher end cameras just include the little buttons and rocker switches to control the camera by hand, rather than from computer software. :)
