Photoshop Questions

I have Photoshop 6.0 installed on my laptop and PC. I use my PC and my main computer. Photoshop runs smoothly and the laptop but on my PC after a few commands it freezes and tells me that it is not responding. I have tried re-installing and defragging my computer but I don't think it defragged correctly so I will do it again.

Next I am having trouble with raw. I know that I need a version of camera roll to convert them to get into Photoshop but I don't know which version I need for Photoshop 6.0. I have a canon t2i by the way.

Any help would be appreciated!

Adobe stops supporting each version of Photoshop once a new one comes out. So, any camera produced after your version of Photoshop was replaced won't be supported for Raw, and you can't get an update. PS 6 is pretty ancient and I don't think it can simply be upgraded to an up to date version. Your options will be to either bite the bullet and buy a new version of PS, or maybe lightroom or similar, use the software that came with the camera to convert your RAWs then import to PS as tiff or jpeg for further work, or use Adobe Dng converter to convert your CR2 files to DNGs and then run those through PS as RAWs (although PS6 may predate DNG, so that may not work).

If you're actually talking Photoshop 6 and not Photoshop Elements 6, you're out of luck as it will not support RAW files. I think RAW support came out with PS7 as a separate program IIRC. It's also not eligible for upgrade to PS CS5.

I don't have/use Photoshop Elements, but I know it won't support your camera either. You might be able to use the free Adobe DNG converter, but I'm not sure it works with Elements.

Looks like time to upgrade or you can always use DPP that came with your camera for the RAW files.

I'd agree that the way to go with your Raw files for now is to use Digital Photo Professional, the Canon Raw processor.

What I'm not sure about is the problems you are having with Photoshop in your desktop PC. How old is the PC? How much RAM does it have? Really, PS6 is pretty old and should run on just about anything that still "breathes", but you are having some kind of problem. You may need to do some low-level diagnostics on your PC -- you could be having something like memory problems (since Photoshop makes use of plenty of RAM). You may even want a shop to take a look at it if you can't get to the bottom of things.

First you have to clarify if it is PS 6 (circa 2000) or PS Elements 6 which does contain a "lite" version of the RAW conversion plugin Adobe Camera RAW. To use it you would have to download the free standalone DNG converter and set it to create DNGs that are compatible with whatever the version number of your ACR is.

If the PS is really PS6 you may have to run it on your PC in XP compatible mode or even Win 98 mode (if there is such a thing).

It is photoshop 6.0. My dad hired someone to make his website a while back and now we have the disk. I can't tell how much RAM I have but hopefully I can put my model number in and you guys can tell me how much. I have a Emachines T5234

CS5 will run you about $699 unless you qualify for an educational license.
Photoshop Elements 9 runs about $99.
Lightroom3 will hit you for about $299 unless qualify for an educational license.

DPP - free
Some people use DPP and a combination of LR and/or Elements.

Ah, OK, Ian dug up some very important info. The E-Machine only has a Gig of RAM, which is half of what you'd consider a bare minimum of two Gigs for being able to not just run software but manage images from modern cameras.

There may be other problems you are having, but right off the bat I'd max out your RAM to the 2Gb limit (you'll have to replace both 512MB chips with 1GB chips. This is easily done -- the docs that came with your computer will describe the process, or, of course, you can have any shop or Best Buy/Geek Squad do it for you.

Your t2i is producing 18 meg files. Your machine, even with the extra gig of memory, may have some issues producing results in a reasonable time frame. My old Acer with an AMD x64 dual core running at 2.0 to your 2.1 was not doing well with 7D files. And converting those files to DNG is a lost cause on that type of machine. I've tried. A mornings shoot of a couple hundred images ran for over 2 hours in the conversion to DNG.

And if you are looking at upgrading software you might better look at upgrading the machine first. Then the software. And by then there will be a new camera out that will not....... You get the drift.

Well then I guess I'm stuck with my laptop. It is a ibm think pas and runs photoshop pretty smoothly... So now how should go about about editing them in raw

No. PS6 did not offer RAW support and even if it did, you couldn't open the T2i RAW files. You would have to convert to DNG and I'm not sure PS6 can even handle DNG files.
