I will probably just run photoshop on the laptop... Is it possible to edit RAW pictures on photoshop 6.0

Use DPP.

That's your answer for now -- the Canon Raw software Digital Photo Professional. Install the version that came with your camera and update it from the Canon Web site (get the updates from a recent camera) and you can process your Raw files, and ones that you need to process in Photoshop you can convert to a tiff or jpeg and open in Photoshop.

The Fry's ad this week had Photoshop Elements 9 for $70 plus a $20 mail in rebate.

So I'm thinking about getting Elements 9. I'm just wondering if GIMP would work to because I don't have much money to spend.

I'm kind of late to the discussion, but I guess you're asking about editing RAW files with The GIMP. Using DPP to process your RAW files and converting to TIFF, then picking them up in The GIMP for further editing should work very well. Elements is a good one-stop option because it includes Adobe Camera RAW to process your RAW files, but you can't beat The GIMP for price!
